Three years ago I started having problems with my neck. Come to find out I have a condition called Dystonia. Dystonia, for me, causes muscle constriction in my neck. Through the last three years the doctors still have no idea what to do, and they believe that something else could be contributing to my condition. Dystonia is not supposed to travel to other regions in the body, but one year ago my torso started to curve. I am always uncomfortable, and in pain from this. Even with this, I push myself more in the tasks I can do. I have been in woodshop my entire high school career, and I can do just about anything that other people can do in the shop. Physiological Basis of disease: DMD is the commonest and most serious form of the dystrophies. The gene responsible for dystrophin which, when absent, causes DMD. Amount of dystrophin correlates with the severity of the disease (i.e., the less dystrophin present, the more severe the phenotype). Since the gene is on the X chromosome, it primarily affects males, and females who are carriers have milder symptoms ( www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000705.htm).
In the United States 54 million people have a disability and only 15 percent were born with a disability (Jaeger & Bowman, 2005). If a person lives long enough, it is statistically likely that they will develop some kind of disability in their advancing years (Jaeger & Bowman, 2005). At some point in your life you could have experience a fractured bone, a minor cut, or had some type of surgery. Imagine after some minor injury that you may not even remember and then experiencing a constant pain so agonizing that no amount of pain medication can make you comfortable (Lang & Moskovitz, 2003). Some additional symptoms that you may also experience are severe burning pain, changes in bone and skin, excessive sweating, tissue swelling and extreme sensitivity to touch (Juris, 2005). These symptoms are associated with a disease that is called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) but more recently termed as complex regional pain syndrome, type 1 (CRPS 1) (Juris, 2005). For simplification purposes this disease will be referred to as RSD throughout this paper.
DMD also known as muscular dystrophy is muscular disease that occurs on young boys around age four to six. Muscular dystrophy is genetically transmitted disease carried from parent to offspring. This disease progressively damages or disturbs skeletal and cardiac muscle functions starting on the lower limbs. Obviously by damaging the muscle, the lower limbs and other muscles affected become very weak. This is ultimately caused by the lack dystrophin, a protein the body produces.
Muscular dystrophy is a complex disease that has been around for many years. Although it was discovered in the 1830s there is constant discoveries about the disorder. Symptoms can appear at any age normally between infancy and age six. Normally, the first symptom of duchenne muscular dystrophy is a delay in milestones that normal children have. For example, there may be a delay in when a child with DMD learns to walk, sit or stand by themselves. Children without duchenne muscular dystrophy normally begin to learn to walk at around nine to twelve months, and can walk well around fourteen to fifteen months. Parents and doctors become concerned after sixteen to seventeen months. However, the average age that a child with duchenne muscular dystrophy begins to walk is eighteen months. Tests after tests including MRI’s, X-rays, and experimental procedures were performed to show I had five ruptured disks in the lower lumbar section of my back. Tedious Examination done by a group of doctors concluded I had a crippling disease of the spinal column called spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal that causes compression of the spinal cord. (Lohr,1) If this disease was ignored any longer, it would lead to many other problems affecting other areas of my back to help support this weakness. It was an extremely rare case for an athlete my age.
There is suggested evidence that a number of anatomical structures such as, bones, intervertebral discs, muscles, ligaments, joints and neural structures cause back pain (Hoy, Brooks, Blyth & Buchbinder, 2010). Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) is a condition that is believed to cause chronic back pain (Weiner & Nordin, 2010). It occurs when there is an extrusion of disc material into the surrounding tissue (Weiner & Nordin, 2010). It is also suggested that abnormal stress of the ligaments, muscles and mechanoreceptors contribute to back pain (Weiner & Nordin, 2010). The main cause of chronic back pain has not been identified, but there are many suggested issues that are believed to contribute to chronic back pain.
When I was planning my senior project I knew I wanted to make something I could keep and use for myself but I wasn’t quite sure who would be my mentor. Then I thought it would be special to do something like this with my grandpa who is now 84 years old and has 40+ years of experience with construction. He even built his home that he and my grandmother are living in today, in 1954. My grandpa started making canes for himself, to donate and just for fun and I thought it will be cool to make myself a cane and customize it with designs. Before starting my project, I had no previous knowledge of working with wood or heavy machinery. The only time I worked with wood was hammering a nail into a wooden wall. Now after I have completed my project, I know how to stain and varnish wood, use a table saw, stationary sander, wood burner and a drill press machine.

Amid the speed and chaos of the modern world, woodworking gives us a place where we can slow down, pay attention, and take the time to do things right.
As stated by the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), the major symptom of Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia) is depressed mood that occurs for more days than not for at least 2 year. Dysthymia shares the symptoms with MDD (Major Depressive Disorder), with the exception that symptoms last for 2 years (APA 2013). The way that Dysthymia is different from MDD is that the subject can function to some extent at a higher level; however, the symptoms last 2 years. To rule out possible medical causes such as diabetes or low thyroid levels, which causes a chemical imbalance that produces similar symptoms, a physical exam would be conducted.
Woodworking, a form of carpentry, has been around for centuries and overtime developed into a more modern art. Today people will mostly see woodwork in homes in the form of furniture and decorations, or even smaller things such as family heirlooms passed down by generations and simple crafts made by younger generations. The skill of woodworking, however, is not inherited but takes practice and years of experience to fully master. Even experienced woodworkers run into challenges sometimes.
