This may sound like blasphemy, but I have never seen a Star Wars movie. Growing up with the last name Force, I can’t tell you how many times I heard, “may the force be with you,” and had no idea what they were talking about! I’ll be honest, there was a time when I wanted to see the movie, but there is a piece of me that refuses because there is an expectation that I would because of my last name. I guess it’s the punk rock in me, I don’t know. The one thing that I do know about the movie is the duality that exists between Luke and his father, Darth Vader, as one fights for good and the other for evil. Jonas has to make the decision to bring Gabriel along on his dangerous journey or to leave Gabriel at the community where Jonas knows that they will kill him. Jonas made the right choice to bring Gabriel. Jonas knew if he left Gabe there at the community they would kill him. Gabe would be given a better chance to live rather than to be left dead at the community. Gabe’s presence could provide Jonas the motivation to keep going towards “elsewhere”.

This novel is about a young boy named Jonas who was elected as the Receiver of Memories, a person who is given the memories from the world that existed before their current society, Sameness. In this society there is no individualism. People can not choose who to marry, or what they want to do for a living. Over time Jonas becomes more and more wise, and realizes that the supposedly perfect community actually has some very dark and negative aspects. The author, Lois Lowry is a 76-year-old writer who focuses her writing on helping struggling teenagers become individuals. Lowry had a very tragic childhood. After both of her parents were separated and killed in the middle of a war, she was devastated and the only way she was able to block and forget all of the horrifying things that were happening, were books (Lowry). “My books have varied in content… Yet it seems… that all of them deal with the same general theme: the importance of human connections,” Lowry explained in her autobiography. It is not possible to be completely certain on the ending of this book by reading this story alone; however, it is possible to gather the evidence and assume what likely occurred in the ending of The Giver. One cannot be sure on what happened at the ending of The Giver; however, I believe that Jonas and Gabriel did not survive. I also believe that there could have been a more effective ending to the story; I highly disagree with Lois Lowry’s choice of leaving it up to the reader to decide what happens in the ending of the story, for it leaves too many unanswered questions. Overall, I did not enjoy the ending of The Giver due to its ambiguity.
