There are many reasons to why these companies are greedily taking advantage of customers. The number one reason is because people who are need of these prescriptions have no other choice but to purchase them. Why does not America do something about these rip-off companies? In 2001 George Bush promised to lower the amount spent on prescriptions for the citizens, but in 2002, Americans spent $162.4 billion on prescribed drugs. (Steele 47) Drugs prices are not likely to fall back down to what they were years ago.
Orphan drugs are drugs that are for diseases that are rare. There is pressure for developing these drugs because researchers can develop them but there is a huge financial problem that the researchers undertake. If researchers develop a drug for orphan patients, the researchers might not get a profit from the drug. Today, in this world, the only thing that people care about is their money. People would do anything to get that extra bonus on their salary.
This situation shows that the governments has been created thanks to the technology. Therefore, the technology should not be controlled by the government. To begin with, if a government limits the technological developments, the lack of the development in the medical technology can cause a decrease at the population, and governments’ economic conditions can be badly influenced. Firstly, millions of people can die. People need to use private hospitals for the best opportunities because of the limited technology that their countries’ hospitals have.
It is not just in small towns or in the U.S. where this problem is happening. Many places around the world is experiencing the same problems with health issues. A BMJ investigation has been taking place in Britain, where they discovered that “cheap drugs… [are] being blocked by pharmaceutical companies” (Donnelly 2015). Rather than having a more efficient way for everyone to have the treatment they need, capitalist companies are only selling the expensive products to have more money in their pockets. This provides inequality within our system because the people who can afford it are the only ones to get the treatment while the ones who cannot are left struggling.
There are many reasons as to why healthcare is more expensive in the United States than any other country. One of them is because of the high profit margins that are protected by pharmaceutical companies. In other countries like the UK, the government can negotiate lower prices which brings down the cost, while the US is stuck paying higher prices because legislation greatly reduces negotiating power of the US government. Another reason is that consumers in America are not the direct payer, therefore, they generally do not care about how much providers charge because it does not directly affect them (through direct pay or taxes). Along the same lines, in many other countries, the government is the only buyer of medical services because patients pay for services through taxes.
Out of all the different forms of trafficking, organ trafficking is the most dangerous. The compensation of organ donors was legal until 1984 when the National Organ Transplant Act of 1984 was put into place. Many people turn to buying organs because there is a shortage of organs and some patients may be on the organ transplant list for years. Because there is such a shortage of available organs for transplantation, many people turn to buying or selling organs on the black market illegally. If trafficking was legalized with regulations, there would rarely be a need to use the black market.
