Drugs In The Mission By Jason Myers
There are three main issues when concerning drug abuse, the first issue deals with the psychological addiction of drugs, the second issue deals with physiological effects of drugs on the human body, and the third issue deals with the psychological and physiological effects of drug withdrawal. The novel The Mission by Jason Myers, capitalizes the issues of drug abuse. Myers illustrates drug abuse through the narrator Kaden Norris who is haunted by the death of his brother. The death of his brother leads Kaden to San Francisco where he is introduced to antagonist of the novel, drugs. After Kaden’s repeated exposure to drugs he realizes the consequences of his actions, and the difficulty of recovering what he has lost. Through Myers’ novel young adults witness the downward slope of drug addiction and firsthand experience the stages of temptation, abuse, and the psychological and physiological damage of drug abuse. This example Myers has constructed of drug abuse is accurately representing the situation of drug abuse in the real world.
Temptation is the first step to abusing drugs. Myers introduces the stage of temptation through peer pressure, which is also a prevalent gateway to drug abuse in the real world. “Peer pressure is a powerful influence among adolescents, and in many cases, a teenager first tries a drug because it was given by a friend” (Adamec). Myers illustrates peer pressure in the novel The Mission in the scene where Kaden is confronted with alcohol, “Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it... I mean, fuck. How can I not now? Kaden told his girlfriend Jocelyn the one week life he had in San Francisco and told her in details about sex with other girls and the criminal acts he had committed because of what the drugs and alcohol made him do. Kaden soon realized shortly after Jocelyn hanged up the phone crying that the relationship he developed with her was over. In just a couple of mere minutes Kaden overcomes his substance abuse but at a price that was not worth it. People who take drugs and alcohol don’t realize the effects and how hard the recovery process can be and the effects it can have o the people your love.
In conclusion, this example Myers has constructed of drug abuse is accurately representing the situation of drug abuse in the real world. Finally, Jason Myers portrayed the social issue of drugs and alcohol accurately and correctly in the novel The Mission.
