Drug War In Prison Essay

Many individuals feel that when an individual goes to prison, the crimes and drugs go away. This is not accurate due to the imprisoned drug offender will do their time and then rejoin the community. These offenders often rejoin the community months and sometimes years later and many head straight back to their drug of choice. There are many of those that will not only go back to the drugs, but they will also go back to prison. (Doug McVay, 2004) But what happens while in prison. One of the ways to help ensure public safety after the inmate gets out of prison is to build families and community resources that will help give the former prisoners the tools necessary try to lead crime or drug free life. We also need to give the skills to fit into the society again. Providing drug offenders with treatment is a more cost-effective way of dealing with substance addicted drug and nonviolent offenders than prison. Studies by the nation’s leading criminal justice research agencies have shown that drug treatment, in concert with other services and programs, is a more cost effective way to deal with drug offenders.
