Drug Use in Sports What is the first thing that comes to mind when steroid use is brought up? Is it negative? Positive? What comes to mind for me is the thought of hard work and working for something you want being thrown out the window. In many sports certain athletes have fallen into the ways of cheating and enhancing their performance through drug use. In the mid 1800’s many people (mainly cyclists) were killed from their hearts exploding or their muscles working to hard because athletes were just beginning to test stimulants and drugs to help them compete on a higher level. Even the Nazis in world war two dabbled in steroid testing and steroid use. In the beginning of 1940 the Nazis test anabolic steroids on prisoners, Gestapos and Hitler …show more content…

These PED’s provide an unfair advantage to the athletes who take them. But by taking them away we can level the playing field for athletes. In 2010 Lance armstrong finishes has last Tour De France cycling race in 23rd place. He plans to retire soon and step away from the sport of cycling with his 7 Tour De France wins and focus his time with his family and cancer research because he is a cancer survivor. But a year after his retirement in 2012 the USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) notified Mr. Armstrong that they were looking into new doping charges. Armstrong quickly fired back with a lawsuit against the charges and accusations made against him. But a federal judge dismissed the lawsuit against the USADA saying his right to due process is being violated. Shortly after Lance Armstrong said that he would no longer fight these charges. The USADA would go on to srtip Lance of his 7 Tour De France titles and banning him from the sport of cycling for life. Within a span of 3 years one of cycling's most prolific cyclists had lost it all. This is a huge example of how doping and PED’s effected a man's life, a sport, and others lives negatively. Imagine all of the money and the hopes and dreams that came along with Lance Armstrong that are now stamped with words like cheater, scandalous, false hero, and failure. Lance Armstrong wasn't only a hero to sports …show more content…

But as history continues and PED’s come into play you see how records and other feats have been tainted with the use of PED’s. If we allow performance enhancing drugs to be a part of sports you would see the record books contaminated with drug-aided athletes who are obliterating old records. This is a problem because if all of the athletes who don't use PED’s would be forced to use them in order to compete with the PED users. We may lose reliance on natural ability. We would most certainly lose what is so special and amazing about our sports today. The fact that some athletes can be superhuman without the aid of drugs and other things. This can also affect the youth of our world by forcing young athletes to use PED’s so that they can compete at a higher level. All of this can also cause serious health defects for each athlete trying to enhance their abilities. A sports writer named Joe Lindsay writes in the topic of Drug use in sports and says “The only difference is a world where the semblance of fair play remains, where sports remain the end product of hard work, determination and talent, and a world where sports becomes merely pharmaceutically fueled entertainment.” This is true on so many levels. We as people can choose to keep rewarding those with natural talent and work ethic or we can see the sports world turn into a drug ran
