“I do not like Green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam-I-Am” (Geisel). This is a line any child in the past fifty years would be able to quote instantly. The famous Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, is one of the best children’s books writers in history because of his short stories like Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, and many more. Dr. Seuss was able to achieve the amount of success he has received because he had moderately wealthy parents, 10,000 of practice, and a birthdate that was advantageous.
Geisel was born to a couple with German ancestry, Theodor Robert and Henrietta Geisel. Both of their parents immigrated to the US during reconstruction following the Civil War. Dr. Seuss’s grandfather and father were both brewmasters in the Massachusetts and were able to “enjoyed great financial success,” even during prohibition (“Theodor...”). With this wealth, his family was able to afford to send Geisel to Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. At Dartmouth, some of the greatest professors in the world would educate Geisel, because his parents were wealthy enough to afford Dartmouth.
It was through Dartmouth that Geisel was able to follow the road to success by way of the 10,000 hours rule. In the fall of Geisel’s first year at Dartmouth, he became a major contributor to Dartmouth’s local humor magazine Jack-O-Lantern. During his time at Dartmouth, Geisel would draw cartoons for every magazine issue. After graduating from Dartmouth, Geisel went on to Oxford where he met his future wife, Helen Palmer. At her insistence, Geisel withdrew from Oxford and started to draw cartoons for humor magazines like Judge. He would go on to publish cartoons for five different magazines.
