In the speech “Effects of Colonialism on Africa’s Past and Present” on Africa’s past and present Dr.Motsoko Pheko believes that the colonization of Africa was a cultural invasion and caused a division of the continent. Pheko uses pathos to advance this view.For example, Pheko states that Africa was destroyed by imperialist Europe and is still being destroyed by Europe militarily. This example of pathos demonstrates that they were getting invaded and the imperialist were messing up their country. They were destroying it. The use of the word “destroyed” appeals to emotion by telling how they were getting invaded and what colonialism was doing to them. He believes that the army is helping them when really they are actually taking their land away from them. May uses Pathos to advance this view. For example, May uses the image of an American Soldier holding this man that looks like a monkey, the U.S soldier is climbing up a steep hill and there are boots in the ground that represent a dead U.S soldier that has tried to help these people but risked his life and the U.S soldier is carrying this “man” towards a school house. Basically they are saying that they are trying their hardest to save these people and they are risking their own lives just to help them and for them to get a better education.
