Dr. King was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia and died on April 4, 1968. He was an American Baptist minister, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He was a very well educated man. When he was only 15 he attended Morehouse College by skipping the ninth and eleventh grade at Booker T. Washington High School. He earned a sociology degree from Morehouse and was valedictorian of his class in 1951 when he attended the liberal Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania and was elected student body president. King came under the guidance of Morehouse College President Benjamin E. Mays who influenced King’s spiritual development during his last year in seminary. Mays was also an advocate for racial equality and inspired King to use Christianity as a force for a social change.

They also founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to tackle the moral authority and organizing power of black churches. King was inspired by Gandhi’s accomplishments of non-violet activism and visited his birthplace in India. The trip increased his determination to the American civil rights battle. One who became one of King’s associates was African-American civil rights activist Bayard Rustin. He had studied Gandhi's teachings and guided him to dedicate himself to the principles of non-violence. Rustin served as King's mentor and advisor throughout his early years of fighting for equality and was the main organizer of the March on Washington in 1963. The March on Washington drew more than 200,000 people in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963. On this day Martin Luther King Jr. made his “I Have a Dream” speech.
