Psychologist, Philip Zimbardo, once stated, “The line between good and evil is permeable and almost anyone can be induced to cross it when pressured by situational forces.” This is extremely relevant within the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. As to how Dorian tries fighting between good and evil with influences from both Basil Hallward and Lord Henry Wotton. Due to the contrasting views of Basil and Lord Henry the deterioration of a man's morals begins to take effect; slowly pulling out the demons that were once dormant. Wilde knew he was not a beautiful man and that he never would be. Instead, he saw who he truly was, a tall, awkward man, and he used this to his advantage. Lord Henry seeks out Dorian and seduces him through his sinister ways. He causes Dorian to think about things that he’s never thought of before. At first, Dorian was disturbed by the effect that Lord Henry had on him, but he just shrugged this thought off. Lord Henry convinces Dorian of the following: "Pleasure is the only thing worth having a theory about," he answered in his slow melodious voice. "But I am afraid I cannot claim my theory as my own. It belongs to Nature, not to me. Pleasure is Nature's test, her sign of approval. When we are happy, we are always good, but when we are good, we are not always happy."(103).
