Death By Pride Man throughout history has wondered if pride is destructive or progressive. In “The Scarlet Ibis”, Doodle is a victim of his brothers pride. Pride can be destructive, it can cause cruelty, overbearing, anger, and even death. I believe it was pride that lead to his brothers guilt. First, the older brother was mean and cruel to Doodle. (p. 353) Doodle called out to his brother saying, “Don’t leave me!”, yet he persisted to run. This shows that Doodle was afraid and couldn’t keep up, but instead of slowing down, Brother left Doodle. Again, on page 353 Brother says a better streak of cruelty awakened in him, so he ran as fast as he could. This process that the brother knew he was bing cruel. I the passage written by C.S. Lewis,
