“Don’t Quit”, a poem by John Whittier and “How to Live Before You Die”, a speech by Steve Jobs are similar and different in many ways. They make the audience feel confident and stronger. The positivity in the text is evident and clear in both stories. The key points between both stories was the imagery and the diction. The speech and poem motivate one to keep going, no matter how hard the struggle, because in the end, it will pay back. The poem contains images like hyperboles and oxymoron. The use of imagery makes the audience feel closer and more emotional toward the poet. “Success is failure turned inside out”, is an oxymoron used by John Whittier. Success and failure are opposite terms used to define the meaning of the line. John Whittier is mentioning how failure is not a bad thing, and it can mean success. The oxymoron likewise gives the poem a dramatic effect. The poet also used juxtaposition. The line, “And you want to smile, but you have to sigh”, shows the juxtaposition. The juxtaposition was used to explain the line more and give further information. He used many phrases and words that influence the reader in a motivational way. His vocabulary was somewhat limited. The poet did not use any difficult words that would be hard to understand. For example, “So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit- It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit”. The poet could have used different words. However, he used these simple words throughout the poem for the audience to understand. This poem is meant for readers of all ages, young and old. Everyone goes through tough times, from all ages. The poem is also informal as the poet used contractions like “Don’t” and “It’s”. Also, he used words like “a bit” and used personal pronouns like “you’re” to make the text
