Traveling to a different country is a life changing experience that everybody should have the opportunity to encounter. It is true that help is needed in the United States, but so many life lessons are learned once borders are crossed. In the Dominican Republic, life is much simpler. People are more genuine, kind, and loving which can make an enjoyable learning experience in all situations. This leads to stronger relationships and memories that are unforgettable.
Topic of Experience A.
The original personal objectives of this project were to abstain from using any electronics while on the trip and to try at least two new foods. Electronics were only used to notify family members of safe travels and then were not used for the remainder of the trip. In the DR, it was incredibly easy to get caught up in the culture and the people which made it easy to forget about life back in the states. Electronics were definitely not missed. There is something amazing about not having to be on a phone constantly. As for the food, there were many opportunities to try new ones. Almost every meal had an original Dominican food. The idea of how education, income, and pregnancy complications play into a mother’s decision to breastfeed was also studied. The findings showed that the majority of women in the Dominican Republic do breastfeed. A common misconception of women in the DR is that they choose to formula feed because they want to be more like the women in America. This, however, was not supported by the findings from this trip. Two doctors and one nurse were interviewed. All three said that nearly all women that they see do breastfeed their children.
