Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, a nun and a poet in the seventeenth-century, stated that, “Misguided men, who will chastise a woman when no blame is due, oblivious that it is you who prompted what you criticize…” perfectly described the situation of women in colonial Mexico. In colonial Mexico patriarchal ruling was applied both privately and publicly. While, men were allowed to participate in politics, obtain an education and given the power to make decisions regarding women’s life. Women, on the other hand, were controlled either by their fathers or husbands; who did not allowed them to participate in activities outside their house and their education was restricted to “how to be a good wife”. While the above was true, there are also documented cases that demonstrate that women, especially widows and unmarried, played a fundamental role in the socio-economic and political structure of colonial Mexico. Through the discussion of some exceptional women who were able to challenge men’s power, I will demonstrate that the common belief that colonial Mexico was largely dominated by men was not necessarily true.
Colonial Latin American society in the Seventeenth Century was undergoing a tremendous amount of changes. Society was transforming from a conquering phase into a colonizing phase. New institutions were forming and new people and ideas flooded into the new lands freshly claimed for the Spanish Empire. Two remarkable women, radically different from each other, who lived during this period of change are a lenses through which many of the new institutions and changes can be viewed. Sor Juana and Catalina de Erauso are exceptional women who in no way represent the norm but through their extraordinary tales and by discovering what makes them so extraordinary we can deduce what was the norm and how society functioned during this era of Colonial Latin America.
Attempting to describe honor and how it was understood in colonial Latin America we must first know how it is understood today. Thereby giving us a point of reference and judgment. According to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary (m-w.com), honor is defined as "good name or public esteem"; "reputation"; "a person of superior standing". Honor in colonial Latin America was viewed much like today yet threats and reactions to threats have changed over time.

Because of colonialism, Native women often find themselves forced into silence around sexual and domestic violence in their communities. Many of the domestic violence cases are reported, but many incidents are not known to anyone but the victim. It is a silent problem, but there are many women who seek help to overcome the indignities of being abused. Domestic violence can be examined on different levels of the Ecological Model (Bronfenbrenner 1979). The ecological theory involves four levels: (1) the societal level (macro system); (2) the community level (meso-system); (3) the relational level (micro system) (4) the individual level. The society level involves culture and social structure, and some examples would be the patriarch culture, social norms regarding acceptability of domestic violence and legal remedies. The community level involves the interrelationship between community and the social roles undertaken by individuals such as home, school, and work. The relational level includes interfamily interactions between spouse/partners and children that can include conflict, infidelity, and social isolation. The individual levels involves personal characteristics such as gender, (males are more associated with perpetration, female with victimization), gender role beliefs (traditional or non-traditional), alcohol use, employment or unemployment status of spouse/partners, and socio-economic status at the community, relational, and individual level (Klevins, 2007). The idea that a woman’s job is to be a wife and mother is old-fashioned, but not completely out of style. Though these roles require a great deal of talent, resilience, patience, love, and strength, to name a few, they are often underestimated or depicted as simple. Especially in modern times, many women in the United States who stay home to raise a family are viewed as anti-feminists, whereas women in Latin America are not criticized for similar actions. In recent decades, more Latin American women have started to break the mold, daring to be both sexy, and successful in the workforce, while remaining pillars of domestic life.
“Wife beating” was a prominent occurrence in Victorian times. It is socially acceptable and may be seen as a characteristic of the lower classes, but “wife beating” is prevalent in all classes. In William Montagu’s social investigation Round London: Down East and Up West, he tells of women in the hospital: “Sometimes as many as twelve or fourteen women may be seen seated in the receiving-room, waiting for their bruised and bleeding faces and bodies to be attended to […] In nine cases out of ten the injuries have been inflicted by brutal and perhaps drunken husbands” (Montagu). Many incidents of domestic violence in Victorian times are influenced by alcohol. But “wife beating” is present in all classes, not just the lower classes as Montagu portrays. Caroline Norton, a Victorian author in mid nineteenth century England, commonly writes of her husbands continuous “wife-beating.” Her husband being a member of parliament is obviously not lower class. Yet she writes of his “physical violence” towards her and how the servants restrain him from “inflicting serious damage” (Norton 1). Sir Pitt also beats his wife also even though he is considered upper class.
