"I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver." -- Maya Angelou This year, I had the opportunity to give back to the community in many ways. I volunteered at Helping Hands, Meals on Wheels, and the county Science Museum. These volunteering experiences further opened my eyes to the needs of my community and the many opportunities to serve by volunteering. Helping Hands has helped my family in the past.
Defending our country is not an easy task, and the emotional stress can be crippling. Statistics show a large number of previously employed military men and women become homeless once discharged, and The National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers and Clients indicates that a solid 23% of all homeless Americans are veterans of the United States armed forces (qtd. in Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans; hereinafter MSHV). While the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs extends help to many, there is still a large demand for its services, leaving it up to communities to organize help for our freedom fighters; hence the creation of the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans, located in Wheaton, IL. Since its beginning, the MSHV has strived to reach out to veterans in need of another chance by providing not only a place to call home, but one-on-one counseling and therapy to better their lives, one step at a time.

The American Red Cross has some paid employees as well as many volunteers. (American Red Cross). Human societies of different nations and culture contain people (also social members and actors) that constantly interact with social institutions and organizations, primarily because these institutions achieve a common goal that is desirable and agreeable to an individual or group.
Some felt the GI Bill was too expensive, others feared veterans would lower standards in education. Many saw a postwar America faced with the loss of millions of jobs, creating unprecedented unemployment. A federal survey indicated that 56% of the nation's soldiers anticipated a widespread economic depression after the war. The GI Bill offered veterans up to $500 a year for college tuition and other educational costs---ample funding at the time. An unmarried veteran also received a $50-a-month allowance for each month spent in uniform; a married veteran received slightly more.
For more than 130 years, The Salvation Army has helped women, children, elderly men, families, and addicts overcome hard times. The Gospel Rescue Missions also help anyone and they do not mind age, religion, race, origin or color. With programs all over the country, The Department of Veterans Affairs target to help homeless veterans and those who depend on them. Another organization is Feeding America, who are a hunger relief charity and they take the lead with helping with the homeless. They provide food assistance to 25 million people throughout the country with low income, which includes elderly and the youth.
There are more than 150,000 veterans that are homeless every day and more joining them. Homeless veterans are serious problem. They deserve better for serving their time and risking their lives for our country. 150,000 of the homeless are veterans this proves that there are a vast amount of homeless. Not only does that prove that veterans make up a huge percentage of the homeless but also does this.
Homelessness has increased more in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Some people are still homeless till this day after the storm happened Hurricane Katrina destroyed 52,000 units, rental homes and people who owned their homes. They have shelters systems provided from mostly churches to try to help homeless. “ Poor people just have been priority recovery and need help to get back on track where they started at”( Rather 2). Homelessness service systems grew larger there are beds available, emergency shelters and transitional housing and permanent housing.
I propose that giving a thanksgiving basket to a low-income/needy family at an Inspire Development Center would be a great. A gift like that to a family that might not be able to have a special dinner on thanksgiving would highly appreciate the people that worked together to put this great event together. Thanksgiving is a day where as a family; everyone is united, having a special dinner surrounded by loved ones, but for a needy family that may not be the case. Families should be able to enjoy a basket full of food with their whole family and give thanks to the special hands that created them and made it possible for them to have a special dinner on Thanksgiving. Problems This proposal is to help a needy family during Thanksgiving this year.
