A community is where a group of people live in the same place and at times share things in common. Today there are different types of communities such as traditional and modern. An example of a traditional community today is an Amish community. There are two types of communities which are discussed in the film The Village. The two types that are seen are Gemeinschaft which is similar to a traditional community and Gesellschaft is similar to a modern community. In a Gemeinschaft the community residences are close; therefore, the members have an intimate relationship with each other. There are other characteristics of a Gemeinschaft community such as small and isolated. In the film it is seen that this aspect is seen with the few houses built plus the amount of civilians. The other example of isolation is seen in the type of location in which the village is created. The location of the village is in the woods; therefore, it is isolated from the “real world” which is the modern community. The clue of isolation was given when the members were not allowed to go into the woods and to travel to go into town. When one of the characters went into town, it was discovered that no one in the town knows about the existence of the village. Another characteristic of a Gemeinschaft community is that they have a homogenous culture, they share the same traditions, rituals, and beliefs. It is also based on a modern society like today. In the film The Village the aspects of Gesellschaft is seen at the end when one of the characters Ivy, travels to the town. No one other than the elders in the village had a true idea about the town. Near the end, Ivy traveled to the town and us, the viewers discovered that the town is modern because of the car. Also in the Gesellschaft community, there is a formal social control such as the authority of a sheriff seen in the film. Another aspect of a Gesellschaft community is the heterogeneous culture or idea and also on a rational will. Members of a Gesellschaft will not base their actions on how it may affect the group but on how it can affect the themselves. An example of the rational will is mentioned when the elders of the village recall their past while living in the town. They recalled the killing and violence how it affected the community therefore they decided to build their own
