On February 14th I spent a day doing something I never thought I would do in a million years, I went to hospice. I always thought I would hate hospice, but I actually didn’t mind it too much, it isn’t a job I see myself doing in the future but it is a job that I understand why people do it and why they enjoy it. During this observation I was touched by how much these nurses really seem to care for each of the patients that they have.
My interest in nursing first stemed when my grandfather was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer. Hospice had come into their home, and I was amazed at how they coped with their job. The people who took care of the person I loved the most, were compassionate and caring. Most of all they helped all of us through a time of need. During that time I realized helping people in whatever way I could in the medical field, was the career for me. My grandmother was also a nurse. She would tell me stories of when she worked in different hospitals. When I heard all of her experiences, I wanted to make memories of my own in the nursing field. I worked with Dementia and Alzheimer patients as a Certified Nursing Assistant for almost three years. Working with the elderly has been one of my greatest achievements. I assisted my residents with bathing, grooming and making them feel comfortable. I was able to create a favorable environment for my residents while working with them. I have had the opportunity to care for wonderful individuals, each of whom have contributed the fabric of my personal nursing career. Nursing is a profession of both joy and sadness combined. My career has provided me the opportunity to care for those I need. In retrospect I can say that my personal nursing tapestry is comprised of patients who were grateful to a care team, after being revived from suffering a sudden cardiac event, the smile of a trusting child, a hand to be held while working with hospice patients and their families. My current role is a case manager. I seldom have direct contact with patients who have chronic illnesses, yet I am gifted with their trust. I have been given an opportunity to support, care, respect, educate, collaborate and research practice improvement initiatives. I continue to formulate my own nursing philosophy daily. While I experience daily encounters that allow my tapestry to become more colorful and detailed, I allow myself to set new goals. My final nursing goal, is to become a nurse practitioner. I can see myself in the next year working in an academic capacity in becoming a leader in rural health improvement and proficient at educating patients with diabetes and other chronic conditions, speaking at national events, advocating for patients and playing an active role in health policy. Who is going to care for our aging population when they are unable to care for themselves? A Certified Nursing Assistant, also referred to as a CNA will. A CNA has many responsibilities in the healthcare field. CNAs are the primary caregivers to residents in long-term care facilities and hospitals. CNAs help residents perform activities of daily living. A few examples of activities of daily living are feeding, bathing, dressing and toileting. With all the responsibilities CNAs have, their job can be stressful. The night shift for CNAs requires getting patients ready for supper and put to bed. Some people may think this is simple, but it is not. On average a CNA is responsible for twelve residents while toileting every resident, assessing their needs, and watching for the other residents call lights, CNAs need to have every resident to supper by six o’clock. Once all residents are at the table for supper, CNAs must give each resident their trays and then feed them. Once they are done feeding the residents, CNAs start taking residents to bed. While giving bedtime care CNAs toilet the resident, wash the resident, brush their teeth, put pajamas on them, and transfer them into bed. While giving night time care CNAs need to listen for the alarms of fall risk residents, answer call lights, and be patient with the resident they are giving care to. CNAs need to give quality care

Nursing assistants may be the first health team members to recognize the physical, emotion, and social, symptoms that may be common to residents experiencing serious or life-threatening illness. (Botonakis, 2012) Providing this crucial information to the supervising nurses is a very important to resident care. Emotional support and social interaction provided by the nursing assistant play an important role in the residents overall stay in a long-term-care center. It also adds to the residents quality of life. While not the most glamorous career field, the certified nursing assistant, is defiantly a necessary and important one.
Though most have a desire to leave earth and enter eternal life peacefully, without any sorrow, the departure of a loved one can be despondent. Previously in 2011, my grandfather passed away due to heart failure. It was an arduous battle, not only for my grandfather, but also for the close knit family surrounding him. His battle with heart failure enabled me to create unforgettable memories with him, even in his final days. Laughing together, playing together and learning significant values about life together made me grow to become a more mature and wise person. Therefore, my personal experience is entwined with empathy because the death of my grandfather has made me realize how dismal it is to lose someone important. It also interplays with self-interest because I have grown as an individual to deal with the ache that is attached to losing a family member. It has helped me to realize how beautiful the gift of life is. Compassion, determination and commitment are qualities I possess that I believe will make me succeed in an Adult Nursing Degree. I am elated to choose this course because it is interesting, challenging, rewarding and satisfying. I have a great passion in assisting the older person especially at their vulnerable state. My experience as a healthcare assistant has given me the opportunity to assist and care for vulnerable elderly people in and care and nursing home setting. The job required me to assist service users with personal needs such as communication, feeding, personal hygiene, elimination and other activities of daily living which has improved my skills and ability of being able to verbally interact in a satisfactory manner to individuals and groups, producing high standard written reports and effectively relating to people from all walks of life. Contemplating on the big responsibility that nurses will have to fulfill in the future, I see myself in a good position. I said that because I love the field and want to do it until I retired God’s willing. It is not impossible to achieve the recommendations on increasing the proportion of nurses with a BSN by 2020. The field of nursing is very fulfilling and anyone who loves people and wants to serve can be a great nurse. I had a love in my heart to do more after I became PCA and worked at a nursing home. I took the necessary steps from being a PCA to a BSN. However from the beginning the ride was not easy. I remember like yesterday, when I first got to San Antonio, Texas looking for a better life for my family. I could barely speak English and I had 4 young children. We only had one car so I had to wait for my husband so I could go to school at night to get my GED after I finish taking care of the kids, cleaning and cooking. With this degree I
My transition into the nursing profession was a major achievement for I am able to use my acquired skills to contribute to the community. As a bedside nurse and a staff member of a large medical establishment, I had to learn how to deliver care to a population that is very diverse. In order for that care to be effective, I must assume the roles of a counselor, therapist, educator, advocate and most of all as an interpersonal facilitator.
My career of nursing is like the cyclical pattern of life, as time passes and situations are experienced, one is shaped into a certain individual/professional, ending up in places that never seemed to be part of life’s plan. Personally, the challenges and triumphs of providing patient centered care to help others live a healthier life, and aiming to prevent illness, is rewarding and quite humbling. As I continue to learn about opportunities to provide individualized care to patients and their families, I further understand the imperativeness of the “whole person,” which is a critical skill of a nurse practitioner. As a skilled clinician, progressing in my career as an aspiring family nurse practitioner in the Stony Brook University School of Nursing, I will impact my patients by providing them comprehensive care that will result in improved quality of life.
