Some students find it challenging to figure an effective way to learn about something and unfamiliar. It has been states that students try to find the easy way to learn, but in fact, there is no such thing (Chew, 2011). Developing “effective learning habits” can cause a major impact on how much information you retain while studying (Chew, 2011). Every student has a distinctive way of learning, but “metacognition is a concept that could drastically impact everyone’s learning” (Chew, 2011). According to Dr. Stephen Chew, a cognitive psychologist, metacognition is, “a student’s awareness of their level of understanding of a topic” ( 2011). Dr. Chew descibes “accurate metacognition" as being, the key transformation between a successful student …show more content…
Dr. Chew explains, stuggling students have a sense of “grossly overconfidence in how well they understand the material” therefore, spend less time in actually learning the material, resulting in shock when receiving poor grades on the test (Chew, 2011). Having a poor metacognition may show poor studying techniques (Chew, 2011). Having poor study techniques can effect students by giving them a sense of confidence but in reality they are not learning anything. Dr. Chew explains “the hallmark of poor study strategies is it build overconfidence without increasing actual learning” (Chew, 2011). It is critical that nursing students have to know how implement what has been taught and what they learned in real life situations. In nursing school having accurate metacognition will benefit a students tremendously. Remembering key terms or scanning through chapters are not going to help applying the information to real life situations thus making it difficut to be a successful …show more content…
I try to remember and learn everything word for word in the but and find myself getting overwhelmed. Dr.Chew explains deep learning as, “ relating new information to prior knowledge or making information personally meaningful” (Chew, How to Get the Most Out of Studying: Part 2 of 5, 2011). I find the software thepoint and the practice questions very helpful in helping me understand what I know and need to go back and review. My studying technique consist of listening to podcast, taking the NCLEX style quizzes, studying with a group, as well as reading the assigned text. When listening to the podcast I try to follow along with the book and highlight what the person speaks on and take notes from there. I use the NCLEX style quizzes to help with my anxiety of how the test will be as far as the 1 question per page style. I find is very helping at the end of the quizes, I can see the rationales and compare how and why the correct answers is such. When studying with a group we all section off specific objective and do those, come together and read over everyones answers along with looking at the page to see where we got the answers. If any one disagree we all look at the book and come up with the correct answer as well. Reading the text is my least favorite thing to do because it takes up the most time and I find myself skimming and trying to remember only key terms and words in the
The first suggestion Leamnson offers to progress learning is to make notes instead of “copying what’s on a chalkboard or being projected on a screen” (3). The essence of Leamnson’s argument is that instead of simply jotting down everything the

Metacognition can be complex; however, it is essential to teach at an elementary level because it’s an intellectual habit that can be obtain by the teacher’s method of teaching and the student’s consciousness of learning. Thinking about thinking is necessary in elementary level because of the awareness of the student’s thinking process. The teacher must be conscious of the different aspects of learning of each student and be able to work with them with different strategies that are the best to make their learning process more effective and interesting.
Mr. Douglas Enclosed in the following are five techniques that you may want to consider using to help you improve your memory.  Finding a reason to remember  Be selective in about what you learn  Organize your information  Mnemonics  Rehearse information through recitation First, finding a reason to remember is very important. If you have a reason to remember information you just learned, then you have a better chance of holding on to it. For example, let’s say a person has trouble with his/her multiplication tables. And the person loves to lift weights. The teacher would use the information form math and apply it to the weight lifting. Such as 5 x 5=25, and lifting five pounds five time is a total of twenty-five pounds. You see this comparison makes the student learn it better because he/she can use it in more ways than one. This technique has helped me the most when I was learning about percentages in math. I could not quiet get the hang of it, so the teacher applied it to how much money would one save if a $50.00 shirt was 20% off. This gave me the motivation to learn it. Second, you should be selective in what you learn. You only want to learn the main ideas and leave the supporting material alone. Doing this should make you memorize the information in a shorter amount of time. For example, if you were trying to study Biology, and there is a lot of it just remember the bold face type ...
Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated experience (Sims & Sims, 1995). Understanding one’s learning style has many advantages as it can help one to identify the learning method or activities that can help to optimise the learning experience. It has been suggested that the importance of one’s learning style has been identified through studies and research on how one can maximise the potential for success and further learning development (Honey & Mumford, 2006). Learning styles are unique to each individual and are developed in childhood (Chase, 2001). We all have different personalities; therefore we all have preferred learning styles that suit us best. The way one learns depends on preference. Some learn by observing, listening and imitating others and draw conclusions from their experience. There are several factors that affect our learning style; for example, background, culture, religion and environment can have a major influence on one’s learning.
My peer review writing workshop went very well. I learn that my peers writing are unique, but Donnovan and Mayari seem to lack on introducing the definition from the dictionary or their own definition. Their writing topic is interesting, but they are still in the process in adding examples to it in order to make a stronger essay. The feedbacks they had given me was somewhat helpful, but the suggestion given by Ms. Siegal seems to be more helpful. I did enjoy the comments given by my peers it made me feel quite impressed they enjoy my paper.
Critical thinking involves extracting credible information which is related to a concept from single or different sources and combining them to build up the concept while meta cognition is being aware Of the decision that or the general process one takes in response to a problem. This two factor greatly influenced my opinion on the topic. I made a decision that I would go on with the testing after giving the patient the required information and they make accept to do the test. Thinking critically whether I do the test or not and the patient has the disorder, the patient will still die of the condition and if the condition is detected and the disorder managed, there will be more negative consequences though the patient will
There are three types of learning styles. They are: auditory, visual and kinesthetic. An auditory learner processes information by hearing and discussing the information. Visual learners process information through visuals such as charts, pictures, and other types of printed information. Kinesthetic learners process information by muscle movements and experiences that are hands-on. Through the assessment I have discovered that my strongest learning style is a visual style with a score of 13, followed by kinesthetic, 8, and lastly auditory with a score of 4. Based upon this, my strength is using a visual learning style. The things I do now in studying that are within the guidelines include: read the book chapters and highlight while reading, pay special attention to charts and diagrams shown in the book or in class. By reading and highlighting I have found I can quickly go back through the information and reread the important facts, helping me remember them better. The more times I go over the information, the more effective I am come test day. I have found it very easy to read charts and diagrams in textbooks. Generally, by being able to read certain charts, it is much easier and faster to comprehend the information than if I was to read the paragraphs about it. A new study strategy that I will implement will include: writing what I highlight down into my own handwriting, adding ...
Cognitive Science is one of the fields that has gained importance in today’s world. Metacognition, a theory that is developed in the late 1970s is a branch of cognitive science. It is proved that metacognition helps the learners learn better. Likewise when the teachers apply the metacognitive theories to the process of teaching then it facilitates the process of learning. Metacognition consists of metacognitive knowledge and metacognitive strategies. Every learner and the teacher are equipped with metacognitive knowledge but it is the use of Metacognitive strategies that create a difference in the learning process. This paper aims at probing the nuances of applying metacognitive strategies to the process of English language teaching.
Metacognition is when the ballet dancer looks into the mirror as they are learning how to position their body. The process of reflection on what we are doing, when we are doing it, is what allows us to understand what actions we take while we are thinking through problems. With the ballet dancer and the mirror, the dancer can see their performance as others might see it, allowing for improvement. However, it must we must acknowledge that cognitive learning is difficult to observe this way, as it is often invisible; cognitive learning is usually something we cannot observe directly. Metacognition requires practice in thinking about thinking until it
An important question to address when attempting to identify effective study strategies and their relationship with academic performance is, “What are study skills?” The term “study skills” can be defined as proficiency in identifying, organizing, memorizing, and using information in order to succeed academically (Proctor, Prevatt, Adams, Hurst, & Petscher, 2006). Activities identified as study skills include “time management, setting appropriate goals, selecting an appropriate study environment, employing appropriate note-taking strategies, concentrating, selecting main ideas, self-testing, organization, and managing anxiety,” (Proctor et al., 2006). When studying, college students employ a variety of these study strategies that they believe
Unfortunately there are no quick fixes for the problems that plague the modern classrooms; there are only stopgaps and remedies which may be helpful in mitigating the problem until a more permanent solution is attained. These remedies constitute my personal teaching philosophy. One of these remedies involves instructing the students in the act of metacognition, st...
The foundation of a classroom setting is based on theories that enhance student learning, have a positive impact on the classroom environment and may “provide valuable guidance for teachers” (Cooper, 2006, cited in Eggen and Kauchak, 2010). Even though teaching is about what a student is taught, there are certain practises that are used to get the most out of students without the student realising. Experts in the field have developed different theories that aim to provide an answer as to how and why children learn. These theories aim to help teachers understand why children think the way they do and why different children respond better to different teaching techniques. There are many differing theories but this paper will focus on three – motivational, social-cognitive and metacognition. This paper will provide information on each theory, backed up by the theorist and will explain how each has an impact in the classroom.
Simple approaches and flexible means are the key to effective learning. Monotony and regimentalized fashion of learning is usually not recommended for the growing minds to ensure that the minds remain open and accept more stimuli from the surroundings.
To achieve my academic goals, I have to maintain a good understanding of the syllabus and results in my studies by keeping up with the schedule as well as preventing procrastination. In addition, I have to view this learning process as the journey of equipping knowledge, unlike my view for the high school examinations, merely memorising and studying for 10As.
