The concept of designer babies brings up some very interesting debate. When you think about it, there are some major benefits that could come from the practice of designer babies including longer lifespans and prevention of diseases like Alzheimer’s. Few would argue that ridding the world of diseases that cause mankind so much pain and suffering as a bad thing. On the other hand, critics of designer babies argue that designer babies would create a major problem in the United States because of the numerous lawsuits that are bound to follow. The parents decide to give him great athletic abilities but leave his height and intelligence average. Later in life the child becomes an outstanding basketball player in high school. Unfortunately, though, because he only has normal height, no college recruiters are interested in recruiting him to their school and his basketball career dies almost as quickly as it began. This presents an interesting problem. Does the child have the right to sue the parents for giving him only some of the necessary abilities to be a great basketball star? Since the child only has average intelligence, basketball was his best chance at making it in the world. Some may argue that the child can sue the parents because they did not give him all the attributes necessary in life to be successful. Others, though, may argue that the parents gave him a great head start over his competition and it was up to him to become successful. Since the procedure of designing a child is new there is a strong chance that more mistakes will be made. Doctors across the country will get sued for causing harm to the mother and/or the child. Or imagine parents gave a list of requests to a doctor for their “baby” and one of the requests that the parents had did not come to fruition. There would be a massive malpractice lawsuit against the doctor. Or let’s say that the doctor, when trying to design the baby, made a mistake and the child was born with disabilities and mutations worse than ever before seen. Parents would certainly be upset and sue the doctor. By opening the door of designer babies we also open the door to a nightmare of
