Love it or Hate it, There’s No in Between New York City. The greatest city in the world, they say! Times Square brings out it’s glory at night. Neon lights flash and city cars rush by honking horns. The skyline at sunset is breathtaking. The water is gloomy. The skyscrapers are immensely tall that they just hover over you creating an enclosed feeling. Chinatown smells delicious. Broadway holds multitude of plays each day. Cultural events take place in the beautiful Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Madison Avenue takes over the luxurious side with hundreds of high-end fashion boutiques. Central Park adds a touch of nature and reminds the beauty of outer Long Island. Multicultural diversities hold all five boroughs. There are over 170 ethnicities represented, over 170 languages spoken. At any place and any time, a person can find any kind of cuisine they wish. Everything about it just seems fantastic. The atmosphere is like nothing you have ever felt before. There is always something to see or do even at 4am. What can possibly be imperfect in this magical city? “Stand clear of...

New Amsterdam became New York and changed hands from the Dutch to the English. But it is not only Dutch place names and styles of architecture scattered across the five boroughs and all of the Empire State that beat witness to this moment in history. The values of openness, tolerance, liberalism and engagement with the world remain the hallmarks of New York, city and state alike. They have made it one of the economic, intellectual and cultural centers of the
Washington D.C: Our Nation’s Capital Although the entire world is familiar with the City of Washington as the United State’s capital, the city was nonexistent when we became a nation in 1789. Thanks to the brilliant design of the French born engineer, Pierre Charles L’Enfant and his assistants Benjamin Banneker and Andrew Ellicot, our capital city that was once a swamp now is beautiful with many different parks, gardens trees, tall buildings and wide avenues. Washington, District of Columbia named after Christopher Columbus, has played a unique role in the wars of our nation and has been dramatically affected by their awesome events.
New York City is frequently presented in various mediums. Graphic novels, comics, and movies have portrayed the city in many ways. There is “gritty” New York, “whimsical,” “realistic,” and dozens of other portrayals. New York is the birthplace of American comic books and both DC and Marvel, the two largest comic book publishers, are based in New York. In fact, the city is present in 13,249 different comic books or graphic novels. So why is NYC a perfect setting for comics? It is because of the iconic locations within NYC, its cultural influence in America, and the city’s diversity, which allow for numerous interpretations that can connect to readers. Graphic novels and comics can present stories in a unique way that words alone cannot accomplish. The images themselves tell just as much of a story and can hold many context clues about events, encouraging readers to closely examine them.
In the early 1990’s the crime rate in New York City was astronomical. Every category including the eight nature index crimes were all on the rise if not extremely high already. Mayor Giuliani a former federal United States prosecutor was elected into office and brought with him a reputation of viciousness against crime. His campaigns lead to the appointment of Commissioner William Joseph Bratton to hold the position of police commissioner of New York City. Giuliani learnt of Bratton’s amazing crime reduction plan that helped reduce crime in two other cities. He requested him for the position as police commissioner for New York City and was appointed in 1990. Bratton had previously helped establish an innovative policing program in Boston Back Bay neighborhood and Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority. Using the same approach he would attempt to reorganize and help the New
People from different race and regions made this city a unique place. Howard wrote, “over the centuries, generations of New Yorkers descendants of people from every part of the world-have built an amazingly diverse state, a place of picturesque towns and villages as well as bustling cities, of farmland, industry, commerce and astounding engineering achievements” (6). New York City is an increasingly diverse and dynamic city with all immigrants making up the majority of the residence in some neighborhoods. The more than doubling of the city’s immigrant population since 1970 has given rise to this dense ethnic neighborhood. Variety of languages from all across the world is spoken throughout the five boroughs. There are numerous cultural organizations in the five boroughs each with integral to the diversity that defines New York City. Queens is in fact the most ethnically and racially diverse borough in New York. I live in queens and I have neighbors whom are originally from Spain, China, Russia, and India. From them I learned a lot of information about their country, many recipes and little bit of their language too. Hanging out with my neighbors is not only fun but also a learning process for me. Every community has their own national and religious festivals. In our festivals we invite each other and thus our festivals become more enjoyable. Throughout the five boroughs the city is
Five star general and 34th president, Dwight Eisenhower once said that, “this world of ours... must avoid becoming a community of dreadful fear and hate, and be, instead, a proud confederation of mutual trust and respect”. When established in 1624, New York was only a very small colony of French Huguenots from the Netherlands where everyone was seen as equal to one another. However, as New York began to develop and change, a wealth gap developed between the wealthy and those who lived in poverty. This wealth gap led to many domestic problems emerging in the city. In George Templeton Strong’s journals, he outlines what the city New York needs to do to become a healthy functioning city. In doing this, Strong is confident that New York will make the necessary changes in order to have a very bright future ahead where many more opportunities will be available for its citizens.
New York City is one of the most significant city in the world. It started out as a small Dutch city and grew to what it has become today. It didn’t “just happen” right away but instead, it took a long time to be called as “The Big Apple” or “The City that Never Sleeps.” The character of the place has gradually changed over time and really came to become a global power city during the early twentieth century. For example, 1783 to 1835 was also an important time period in the history of New York City that laid a strong foundation to become an industrialized city. However, considering the developments that happened from 1898 to 1945 to be more organized and effective, the most iconic and quintessential period was from 1898 to 1945 in the history of New York, which we haven’t reached it in our course so far.
I've loved this city since I was knee-high everything about it sprung out at me, the bright bold lights of times square, the hustle and bustle of Greenwich village and China Town and the serenity of central park. Everything about this city made me feel at home. I stepped out off the corner of pearl street and skipped into the Starbucks coffee shop on the other side of the street. The coffee shop
American cities in the 1900’s were the prime place to be. Cities were clean, industries were booming and education was a priority. “The city, not the farm, had become the locus of national experience” (Chudacoff and Smith 255). Everyone wanted to live their dreams in the city until they shortly realized the cities became overpopulated, hectic, and stressful. Streets became filled with garbage from people littering, traffic is always a problem, and there is no where to relax and enjoy yourself without the stress of work. The suburbs became the place of relaxation. Where people who had jobs in the city took a vacation to their house in the suburbs. To bring American cities back to life, people should focus on the way suburbs construct their ways
When you associate anything with New York City it is usually the extraordinary buildings that pierce the sky or the congested sidewalks with people desperate to shop in the famous stores in which celebrities dwell. Even with my short visit there I found myself lost within the Big Apple. The voices of the never-ending attractions call out and envelop you in their awe. The streets are filled with an atmosphere that is like a young child on a shopping spree in a candy store. Although your feet swelter from the continuous walking, you find yourself pressing on with the yearning to discover the 'New York Experience'.
Naples is a very unique city that attracts people from all over the world to its beautiful surroundings. Amongst the pristine beaches and championship golf courses, a teenager can find many entertaining locations. One such area can be found in downtown Naples on Fifth Avenue. Along this stretch of road near the beach lies a vast array of shops, cafes, restaurants, and other establishments. I often find myself spending many nights on Fifth Avenue, walking along the tree-lined streets or sitting in one of the numerous cafés or restaurants.
My main reason for having such a strong urge to move to a city like New York is the variety of entertainment such a city offers, such as shopping, unique eateries, and shows like concerts and musicals. During my stay in New York, I was s...

I think we all have a beautiful place in our mind. I have a wonderful place that made me happy a lot of times, years ago. But sometimes I think that I am the only person who likes this place and I'm asking myself if this place will be as beautiful as I thought when I will go back to visit it again. Perhaps I made it beautiful in my mind.
