“These are my friends. Their wives are also accused-” Said by John Proctor in Act III of The Crucible. Governor Danforth had just offered a deal with John about his wife, Elizabeth who has been accused of witchcraft. Elizabeth says she is pregnant, but is not showing any signs yet. The offer to John was to keep Elizabeth alive for one year to see if she is really pregnant, but John and is friends had to leave the court. John refuses to take the deal because his friend’s wives are also accused and are condemned to hang. This shows John's loyalty to his friends by not accepting Danforth's deal. Everyone else in The Crucible goes to Church on a regular basis. John, on the other hand, is not a very religious man compared to the rest of Salem. He had not visited the Church in a long while and he has been plowing on Sundays. At the end of Act III John says, “I say… God is dead.” This proves that he does not really care about how others feel about religion. Just like John, I can relate to being an outsider on certain activities or ways others react or get through life. The way I can be seen as an outcast is that I moved to Pennsylvania from New York. People can say that I act and speak a little differently; even though the States are right next to each other, the people do converse and act different. An additional way I can associate with John on this trait is that I am an introvert. Naturally, I am not outgoing like others; I’d rather be by myself or with a couple friends.
