‘Skyscraper’ by Demi Lovato is a song that has empowered me and helped me fight through my toughest battles. The song was not written by Demi herself, but by three other songwriters, and then recorded by Lovato. The songwriters were inspired by an illustration of an imaginary apocalypse, in which one skyscraper was still standing tall, throughout all of the destruction surrounding it. Lovato recorded the track before she entered rehabilitation for an eating disorder, and she called this song her ‘cry for help’, as she was in a dark place whilst first recording the song. The song was released in 2011, after she had left rehabilitation, and contrasts largely with the other songs on the album as they are generally upbeat; however, this song was a focal …show more content…

In this line, Lovato’s vocals are reduced to a quiet whisper, reinforcing the idea that all of her obstacles make her feel small and scared inside. All the obstacles in her life made her feel worn down and this takes over her thoughts, making her always think of herself as weak: ‘Like I’m made of glass, Like I’m made of paper.’ These toxic thoughts eat away at her, and she views herself as easily breakable. In the music video, we see Lovato with a black fabric that symbolizes the toxicity that overtook her mind, and she begins to unravel it as if all the toxicity is flowing out of her, and she is releasing it from her life. In contrast to the previous lyrics of despair and feelings of worthlessness, she goes on to sing about how she is unbroken, which is a powerful motif as her album takes the word as its title. ‘Unbroken’ is an apt name as it relates to show how she has not been completely broken by the circumstances she was in: ‘All the windows, still are
