Anyone can be successful in life, but what makes an individual successful? Being successful doesn’t always make you well-liked or highly thought of. I believe, when you have goals that are set and are accomplished throughout life is the key to being successful. As Americans, we often look forward into accomplishing our dreams. In the play "Death of a Salesman," by Arthur Miller he has two characters Willy and Biff that have American Dreams. These dreams can be separated into two; a business or historical dream.
Throughout life we want the greatest achievements such as: purchasing a car or house, having a decent career, family, etc. If these goals are met then this would be historical. Whereas, having a decent career that pays you well and allowing you to live a posh life is considered as business. Willy was the main character throughout this play. He was a salesman who achieved his historical dream; having a family, job, and home. Meanwhile, he hopes to find success as well as wealth. Willy achieved very little in his life and believes, that because he works and teaches his children Happy and Biff that’s being successful. …show more content…

Willy's idea of the American Dream was defined as oneself being a risk-taker or favored. Although Willy trained Biff and Happy as an American Dreamer, both were unsuccessful. For instance, Biff admitted to joking off his instructors stuttering, his father was more disturbed how the students reacted, Biff: "Yes Sir! I see, the reason he hates me, Pop- one day he was late for class so I got up at the blackboard and imitated him. I crossed my eyes and talked with a lithp. His father says, "(laughing) you did? The kids like it?" Biff replies "They nearly died laughing!" Willy goes to say "Yeah? What'd you do?"
