A family is hit by a flood, and the grandfather describes everything that occurs as his family members are starting to perish away from the water. Death does not care about someone’s age, color, gender, occupation, or reputation. Death has one job, and its job is collecting souls and move to the next destruction. Many humans share a common fear of losing a loved one, yet authors utilize death to convey a profound meaning within their novel. In the first paragraph Bill Barich’s novel, Laughing in the Hills, he uses the inevitability of death to supply the reader with insight on the theme of his writing.
Death’s characterization of opportunity begins to fade as it becomes more ambiguous. The shift to ambiguity is symbolized in the literal and metaphorical fog Marlow and his crew encounter. Previously before the fog, Marlow explains, “at night sometimes the roll of drums behind the curtain of trees would run up the river...Whether it meant war, peace, or prayers we could not tell”(Conrad), which highlights Marlow 's growing doubt in the previous optimistic characterization of Death. With the native’s lurking presence, he is constantly reminded at night that he does not know if they will be friendly to him or if they wish to kill him. Uncertainty settles in. Later when the fog sinks in, a paradigm shift occurs where uncertainty overhauls Maslow 's previous characterization of Death into a more indifferent role. When Marlow describes the fog he states, “It did not shift or drive; it was just there, standing all around you like something solid.” Up and to this point in the novella, Death was understood as an opportunistic force but is now perceived as an omnipresent character similar to how Marlow describes the fog. The novel River God by Wilbur Smith is set in Ancient Egypt, during a time when the kingdoms were beginning to collapse and the Upper and Lower Egypt were separated between two rulers. The story is in the view-point of Taita, a highly multi-talented eunuch slave. At the beginning of the story, Taita belongs to Lord Intef and helps manage his estate along with caring for his beautiful daughter, Lostris. She is in love with Tanus, a fine solider and also Taita’s friend. Unfortunately, Lord Intef despises Tanus’s father, Lord Harrab, and Intef was actually the one who the cause of the fall of Harrab’s estate, unknowingly to Lostris and Tanus. Taita’s goal is to bring back Egypt to its former glory, but with so many bandits and invaders it would be a difficult task.
Many different people die many different deaths. Some of the more fortunate die soundly, while asleep. Others die more painful deaths, slow, cold, torturous deaths. There are of course all of the deaths in between, that may be unpleasant, but most definitely not torturous. All or most people fear death, especially the deaths that are not so person friendly. In Saki’s, “The Interlopers”, two men die very slow and painful deaths. They came about the death through a long time family feud between their families, and the two men based their lives on it until right before the end. In the short story, “The Interlopers”, the two men did not deserve the death that came about them for the war that started it began long before they could do anything about it, they were trying to end the feud, and even if they did deserve to die for their horrendous acts upon one another, not such a horrible death.
Death is shown through acceptance in Dickenson 's "Because I Could Not". The speaker knows that death is a apart of life that cannot be evaded. This essential idea of apparent arrival transitions to a slower, foreseeable fate where one can imagine the enduring pain experienced “an iceberg between shoulder blades” (line 8). This shift characterizes the constant adaptation in appearance that death acquires. Moreover, the idea of warmth radiating from death’s presence reemerges with the introduction to a “cottage of darkness” (line 10), which to some may bring about a feeling of pleasantry and comfort. The fact that our last days on Earth is unknown makes the topic of death a popular one for most poets who looks to seek out their own emotions. By them doing that it helps the reader make sense of their own emotions as well. What little money they earn from the hard labor goes toward food for the family. Although this is not how everyone in lives. Strong political figures are those who live in luxury. This is the way it is in Kafr El Teen, where the characters of God Dies by the Nile, live.
The Great Flood of 2016 caught everyone in South Louisiana by surprise. During this time, everyone needed to come together and help one another in this hard time and that is what me and my family did to help the ones who needed it the most and one of those people ended up being my best friend who was going through the worst time possible. The role I played during the flood helped make me realize how thankful I am for the things i have and that I am blessed to live every day.
