In every era of civilized society there always is a need to fit in with the crowd. People who go against the crowd are non-conformist or otherwise called transcendentalist. In the movie Dead Poets Society the Vermont based, Welton private school is constructed around strict guidelines. These guidelines must follow the textbook to at and not deter from it. The parents try to reform their sons by limit their latent potential and finding what they want to do in their lives for their own experience. During this movie, the students and Mr. Keating use transcendentalism ideas such as human potential, non-conformity, and truth through observation to become their own image of themselves as they journey through their high school year. In Welton, the courses are strict and were exactly what was in the book. There is no creativity or individuality, an only mechanic like a rubric that is step by step guides on how to do everything perfectly. Mr. Keating an English teacher in the school has his students read the first page of their English book. In the book, the professor responsible for writing the page says a poem is supposed to be mechanical. Mr. Keating has his students rip out the page and rebukes the professor, who wrote it, for his views on poems.Mr. Keating is showing nonconformity by going against the norm and not following what all the other teachers taught, straight out of the book. He believes that acting is his true passion and wants to see how far he can go, Mr. Keating, his English teacher tells him to follow his dreams and not to care about how his dad feels. Neil joins the theater in school and takes part in a play. Neil is finally able to show his potential that he had to hide beforehand.
