Waco, Texas. It is one of those places on the map that unless you live in Texas, you might not know it exists. It’s just another place in the United States. Unfortunately it’s a place where almost 80 people, including 17 children, died in a mass fire. All these people had one thing in common. They all belonged to a cult. Merriam-Webster defines a cult as “a small religious group that is not part of a larger and more accepted religion and that has beliefs regarded by many people as extreme or dangerous” Cults are usually looked down upon by society because of their bizarre traditions, beliefs, customs. As a child he was a member of his grandmother’s Adventist Church. Adventists believe that there will be a second coming of christ and they have a more literal interpretation of the last book in the Bible, Revelations. He soon left the church when he was older. In 1981 he moved to Waco where he joined the Branch Davidians.. The leader of the Branch Davidians was a woman named Lois Roden who David had a relationship with died. Some of which were legally married and others were underage girls. He also said that God said that the Branch Davidians should build an army for God. David and the Branch Davidians believed that one day the world would end and only them would be allowed into this kingdom. In order to begin making this army, David had ordered high powered weapons and started to train some of the men. Even the younger boys were expected to train for this army. While the boys were training some of the woman were doing other things. Girls as young as eleven were given golden stars that meant they were ready to have sex with the cult leader. David Koresh had many “wives” His wives included married women or underage girls. The children were expected to call their parents “dogs” and David Koresh was their only father. It was also known that they would get abused as punishment when they did not follow the rules. The FBI and President Clinton had heard that the children were being sexually assaulted by Koresh but there is no actual evidence to prove it. Even after the fire, some followers who survived still believed that Koresh was a prophet. They believed that there families who died were not really dead. They were unconscious and they were waiting to be resurrected and then taken to a kingdom that didn’t allow
