Imagine your whole family hating you and your mother abusing you so much you rather die. This was the exact situation with Dave, the main character of the book and the author of the book. For three year old little girl she was babysitting, Kendra. For Dave’s whole life his mother treated him like a slave and abused him when he did absolutely nothing wrong. The book A Child Called “It” by Dave Pelzer, published in 1995 is a book with a meaningful life lesson behind it. In the book, Dave Pelzer showed that he never gave up by not letting his mother treat him like a slave. For instance, on page 4 it notes, “My mother can beat me all she wants, but I haven’t let her take away my will to somehow survive.” In other words, Dave is saying how he can show that his mother can abuse him but he will fight and stay alive no matter what. Another example is on page 34, “ I told myself no matter what I did I would not let that take me down.” Meaning, even when he was being abused and felt like he was going to die, he was going to keep trying to stay alive. Lastly, on page 28, the book states, “ I will stay alive.” Explaining, that he is going to survive no matter what and not give up. In the book A Child Called “It”, he showed that he always had hope by always remembering one day this will end. For Example, on page 167, the author adds, “Even in its darkest passages, the heart is unconquerable. It is important for people to know that no matter what lies in their past, they can overcome the dark side and press on the brighter world.” Meaning, even if your life is at a bad point in time you can defeat it and it will become better. Another example, on page 46, “ I Dreamed of one day when I was free and out of my mother’s control, until then I will hope that I can survive.” Explaining, when dave was abused he couldn’t wait to be free and he hope he could stay alive.” Lastly, on page 92, the book adds, “Sometimes as I dried the dishes, I felt a new ray of hope. Hope for my father to come back and save me.” In other words, Dave was explaining how he never gave in and always had hope for his mother to stop.
