The story of Cyntoia Brown: Cyntoia had a rough life. When Gina, cyntoia's biological mother got pregnant she was a teenager and was not in the right state of mind to even take care of a kid. She didn't even know how to make a bottle plus she was drinking throughout her pregnancy and then she was introduced to crack cocaine and dropped the drinking. She wanted to escape her responsibilities and this is why they made her mother give cyntoia up for adoption. Cyntoia has a sex list. Cyntoia never went to her adoptive mother about anything going on in her life because she was always afraid her mother wouldn't care and would just send her to her room to play. When cyntoia was 16 years old she was sex trafficked by a pimp named “cut throat.” cyntoia was raped and drugged by different men who were purchased by a 43 year old child predator who took her to his home to use her for sex. She finds enough courage to fight back so she picked up a gun and shot him. Cyntoia brown was arrested as a result of being arrested she was tried and convicted as an adult and was found guilty and is sentenced to life in prison. The story is told in first person, being told by Elizabeth when she gets older. “Marigolds” takes place in Maryland during the Depression. The reader can tell it is the time of the Depression because in the story it says, “The Depression that gripped the nation was no new thing to us, for the black workers of rural Maryland had always been depressed.” Both the setting and time in this short story are important.

If single, they did work which usually involved some form of service such as working as a waitress, cooking etc. Many young women were simply expected to get married and have children. In this book there is a girl who doesn’t want to grow up, get married, and have children, because once you grow up in that time period there is not much you can do. The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly is about a girl names Callie, who is interested in science and knowledge. Callie's grandfather teaches her everything he knows, while her parents want her to be a lady who is married. Callie wants to have an education and be things like a scientist or a veterinarian. Which in that time in not normal. One character that stands out in the story is Callie. This character can be described as resourceful , Intelligent, and Curious.

Making a cyanotype for the first time was a fun experience. A cyanotype is blueprint (literally) that makes a silhouette of the object. The short story "The Chrysanthemums" gives insight into the life of its author. John Steinbeck was born on February 27, 1902, in Salinas, California. The locale of the story is of key resemblance to the Salinas in which Steinbeck was born and bread. "Salinas was a typical American small town, [differing] only in location and a few distinctive features" (McCarthy 3). The protagonist of this story, Elisa Allen, also resembles Steinbeck's first wife. "Steinbeck probably based the character of Elisa Allen on his own first wife, Carol Henning Steinbeck. Like Elisa, Carol was a woman of considerable talent and energy who wore 'masculine clothes' and was 'strong, large-boned' and 'handsome rather than pretty'" (Hughes 23). Similar to the time frame in which Steinbeck lived, the theme of the story comes across as being male dominant and the rustic setting allows us to visualize this.

Under Draconian law in Ancient Greece rape was similar to that of Sparta in that it wasn’t illegal. However, the consent of women during sex was irrelevant to Draconian law who saw it was a man’s responsibility to take what he could if he was in the position of power . However, as time passed in certain societies, such as Athens and Gortyn, rape was made illegal, the punishments for this crime did differ between societies and social classes. In Gortyn rape was punished by fines. The fine of slaves for committing a rape was double that of rape committed by a free person, whereas the punishment for rape committed by a free person on a slave or apetairoi was one tenth what it would be for raping a free person . Athenian law punished rape far more seriously, with both Plato and Aristotle both mention any man who violates a women may be killed by the women, her father, brother or son . This one example helps show the differing social and political rights of both male and female citizens in different social classes in Gortyn. The story of Lucretia begins with men boasting about their wives, trying to determine who is the best of them all. It is clear to them that Lucretia is the winner when she is found “hard at work by lamplight upon her spinning” (Livy, 100). Many of Brent’s careless and violent actions have caused negative consequences. Brent starts the ball of bad consequences rolling when he goes to a party with his friend Jake. The night starts off bad and gets worse from there. Brent begins to drink, clouding his mind and affecting his judgement. He goes up to his crush Brianna while under the influence and starts to chafe her, causing her to get mad and begin yelling at him. Brent becomes severely depressed and suicidal, and he decides to try and kill himself while supposedly driving home. This is the first of many corollaries that Brent experiences. It seems that Briony has a difficult time differentiating between knowing and actually seeing. Briony did not even think twice that maybe she misinterpreted Robbie and Cecilia's whole relationship, but instead she jumped to conclusion. Briony used her freedom of expression too much of her advantage. She used her imagination to describe these events and write the story in a way she would hope for them to play out. Briony was too young to understand the difference between reality and imagination and this led her not to consider the consequences of her actions. All that mattered to Briony was that she got attention from those around her. Briony had committed a serious crime and her actions led innocent Robbie to go to jail (McEwan 186).
