John Steinbeck focuses this novella mainly on complex concepts such as loneliness and within that category he tackles segregation, which is represented by the Character Crook. Crook is a black guy who during the novella was seen as inferior to the whites, and thats why the separation between the guys from the ranch and Crook is quite evident in the book and this can be seen as the writer states “Crooks, the negro stable buck”, he is introduced through his race. Nevertheless, the novella does not explore his feelings towards the people in the ranch, how he really felt when everyone appeared at his room and exchanged words with Crook. Given this scene from the book, in this assignment I will focus on his isolation, the concept of racial discrimination
