Criminogenic media is what researchers have claimed to be a cause of crime. What this is saying is that people some people seek out certain types of media that supports their type of behavior. Perhaps a child living in an abusive household with no rules, would seek out various media that mirror his view of how things work. Such as more violent movies, TV shows or video games. There are three main arguments that are made about whether criminogenic media has an effect on aggressive behavior, is a direct cause of crime, and the relationship that the media has with terrorism. In order for a crime to become a copycat crime, it had to have been covered and inspired by a media-publicised event. Within copycat crimes, there are three mechanisms that are discussed. The first is called priming and this is reading, hearing, or witnessing crime via media. The second is what the media refers to as ‘scripts’ and these are pre-established behavior held in our memories. The final mechanism is in narrative persuasion, and this is where an individual is influenced by story characters and forms there own reality and ideas based off these characters. There are various examples of copycat crimes based off of movies, TV shows, and video games. They are both inspired or guided by five principles which are aimed at external audiences, the victims are symbolic, which is done to maximize fear, anxious media ready to publicize violence, a manipulated media, and using governmental statuses as targets. Terrorists have learned to manipulate media to avoid gatekeeping while also using the media as a profit source. They are also furthering their understanding of the dynamics of the news and media coverage operations. Terrorists and the media are in competition with one another. The terrorists want to use the media to broadcast their violent acts and the media want to cover and further publicize these violent acts. These could include high visibility targets, graphic terrorist acts, post-event videos, interviews, contact with media before and after acts.
