New Draft I would consider cricket as a sport since it contains the main characteristics of having a physical dimension, competitive element, an institutional organisation and be accepted by the media which distinguish it from activities like recreations and hobbies (Green, 2008 ). It contains the physical dimensions of sport in that you have to be in good physical condition as you will be running around for sometimes a whole day. It also involves ‘expert hand-eye co-ordination and so qualifies as a sport’ (Green, 2008), in that when batting you have to have good hand-eye co-ordination or else you wouldn’t be able to hit the ball. Whilst cricketers also have to have a strong mental side to be able to perform at a high ability for a whole day’s …show more content…
Lastly, I believe cricket is a sport due to the media acceptance; cricket is a popular sporting audience on sports channels and radio stations as well as big companies putting a lot of money in sponsorships …show more content…
The public sector provides sports facilities and services which are funded by the government, which can be on a local, regional or national level (Green, 2008). The facility itself contains lots of different types of opportunities for customers from a gym, swimming pool, multi-purpose pitches, badminton courts and an athletics track. This means the facility can be used by many people and for many purposes so certain clubs will hire out the facilities for their own use, for example Sutton Coldfield running club hire out the track for their own use. The leisure centre is mainly used by over 60’s since there is a scheme called Be Active which is a free scheme open to Birmingham residents, working in partnership with Birmingham Public Health to offer all Birmingham residents free swimming, group exercise classes and gym sessions at certain times at various leisure centres and parks (Birmingham leisure). Whilst also being used heavily by under 20’s as this is the age that is most into health and fitness since parents try and get their children into sport, this is shown by the amount of children’s swimming classes run at
The relationship between cricket and politics is clearly delineated in South Asia from 1880 to 2005 through the easing of the stress between totally different caste members, although the stress mitigated wasn't forever from a religious aspect between the Pakistanis, Indians, and also the British. The various issues that arose in South Asia was largely class or caste systems (Docs 2, 3, 4), rivalry (Docs 1, 6, 10), and religious tensions (Docs 5, 7, 8, 9) against the various countries and cricket groups. Throughout its interaction with Indian politics from 1880 to 2005, cricket has served as both a unifying force between totally different political groups and also has divided political groups in periods of power struggle and political variations, as well as making sturdy bonds between countries.
Bowling and Golf both share unique aspects of their individual sport. Bowling is considered an anaerobic activity, while golf is an aerobic activity. In bowling, one usually does not get sweaty or become suddenly out of breath, however, in golf, since one is consistently walking to retrieve their ball to where they the ball landed, both sports have their own purposes of exercising. In addition, in a Chicago Tribune article, Bowling may be a sport, but is it work?, by Marla Krause, interviewed the head coach of a boys' bowling team at New Trier High School in Winnetka, he says,” As exercise, it may not be like running or swimming," Durkin said, "but it takes some leg and upper-body strength to throw hard and hook the ball.” As this course taught

In "Darwin's Dangerous Idea", Dennett describes the QWERTY phenomena in biological and cultural evolution as an example of how "mere historical happenstance... restrict[s] our options" (6:131). Economists add a value judgment to this description, some using QWERTY as an example of market failure and inefficiency. However, the evolution of QWERTY, like cricket, follows rules that are enigmatic at first glance. Economists do not pursue the analogy with evolution and, as a result, do not detect the fundamental change in the system of production that rewrote the rules of efficiency. A historical retracing disentangles the reasons for QWERTY's continued dominance of keyboard systems. The integration of parts in the system of production demanded compatibility: the efficiency of the whole above the efficiency of the individual.
To this day video games are not considered a sport because it doesn’t require physical work. Even though it is not considered a sport, events exist in which teams compete for a big prize. Some people think that video games are a sport because it requires an incredible ability to play video games and know how to play the variety of games that exist. Others think that video games are just moving your fingers and pressing buttons, but it goes a lot further than that.
High school gives you the opportunity to explore and engage with different sports or/and extracurricular activities. Many of which are arguably classified as a sport. A sport is something that requires someone to have a special set of skills to do what they are doing within the said sport and also a sport requires some form of physical excellence in said athlete NASCAR simply does not have this no matter what type of shape you are in you can drive a car. NASCAR drivers are not really special either due to the fact that nearly everybody in this world can drive a car. NASCAR is taking a basic everyday thing and putting a competitive feel to it which simply does not work if it did anything and everything could be a sport. If all a sport was something that had a competitive feel to it then breathing could be a sport or even sleeping could be if it just had to have a competitive side to
In the chapter “ Sport and the Nation: Out of the Left Field ”, Gamal Abdel-Shehid and Nathan Kalman-Lamb discuss the idea of the nation, in particular, the history of how it came to existence and the application of such notion to the world of sport. The authors point out that, “ if people speak the same language, cook the same type of food, wear the same types of clothes, listen to the same types of music, have ancestors who did the same sorts of things and who lived in the same place, they are, it appears, part of the same nation” ( Abdel-Shehid,& Kalman-Lamb, 2011). However, a social theorist called Benedict Anderson analyzed nationalism through the concept of “imagined community” (Abdel-Shehid,& Kalman-Lamb, 2011). This term basically means that people tend to feel the sense of belongingness to a certain nation without actually knowing anybody (personally) from that nation. An example could be when these nations participate in events such as the Olympic Games (RIO).
Is horseback riding a sport? Some people do not think horseback riding is a sport, but it really is in more ways than one. Horse and Rider need to be physically fit to be in the show arena or even just on a trail ride. Riders have to communicate with their horses just like the horse has to communicate with the rider. Being safe while riding is also very important. There are so many reasons why riders need to have a relationship with their horses. Some people think horses do all the work while the rider just sits there. Although not viewed by many people as one, horseback riding is a sport due to challenges and labor put forth by the athletes who participate in the activity.
Sports show how athletic a person is or how well they at doing a certain thing. If you're good at running then you could do track. But some sports may require a lot of skill, such as hockey. Is dance a sport or not? Some people in our world today consider dance just to be all frilly and fragile. Dance takes time, effort, determination and impeccable strength. I believe that dance is a sport because it has the same components as any other sport. In any other sport you need to work hard with a lot of effort, and that is exactly what dancers do. For example, most beginning dancers practice between five to ten hours a week. Although most people in our world today look at dancing as nothing more than tutus and twirling, a good dancer must have a mind mentally engaged, a body able to endure physical challenges, and toned dedication and skill.
As the media bombard the American public with unrealistic images, a new obsession with fitness has hit the markets. With more and more people aiming to lose weight, the fitness industry has been pressured to accommodate the high demands for efficient and entertaining workouts. This greater variety of work-outs hitting the market is a result of the diverse types of people who are trying to get in shape. Health clubs are no longer only for those 20-30 year olds who are in competitive training or those who need to be fit as a job requirement. Instead, these facilities are now packed with people of...
A sport is an athletic activity requiring skill or physical ability. Some might say it’s not a sport because we “don’t do anything”(fellow peers). “In 1980 the number of cheer related emergency visits was 4,954 and in 2007 it was 26,786”(Hope Reeves). “That is nearly a 500% increase in a matter of 27 years”(Hope Reeves).
Sport, according to the oxford dictionary, can be defined as an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Sport may seem like just another, simple five letter word yet it has the power and aptitude to teach humanity such fundamental and intellectual life lessons. In my speech I will explore these vital lessons, such as failure, success, perseverance, teamwork, tolerance, responsibility and discipline by exhibiting how each lesson can be learnt and utilised.
