New Draft I would consider cricket as a sport since it contains the main characteristics of having a physical dimension, competitive element, an institutional organisation and be accepted by the media which distinguish it from activities like recreations and hobbies (Green, 2008 ). It contains the physical dimensions of sport in that you have to be in good physical condition as you will be running around for sometimes a whole day. It also involves ‘expert hand-eye co-ordination and so qualifies as a sport’ (Green, 2008), in that when batting you have to have good hand-eye co-ordination or else you wouldn’t be able to hit the ball. The public sector provides sports facilities and services which are funded by the government, which can be on a local, regional or national level (Green, 2008). The facility itself contains lots of different types of opportunities for customers from a gym, swimming pool, multi-purpose pitches, badminton courts and an athletics track. This means the facility can be used by many people and for many purposes so certain clubs will hire out the facilities for their own use, for example Sutton Coldfield running club hire out the track for their own use. The leisure centre is mainly used by over 60’s since there is a scheme called Be Active which is a free scheme open to Birmingham residents, working in partnership with Birmingham Public Health to offer all Birmingham residents free swimming, group exercise classes and gym sessions at certain times at various leisure centres and parks (Birmingham leisure). Whilst also being used heavily by under 20’s as this is the age that is most into health and fitness since parents try and get their children into sport, this is shown by the amount of children’s swimming classes run at
