The Empire Strikes Back Foreshadowing Assignment Luke is currently on Dagobah. Luke is shown with Yoda strapped to his back running and swing on vines in a foggy bog. Yoda states “Run! Yes. A Jedi's strength flows from the Force. But beware of the dark side. Anger... fear... aggression. The dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan's apprentice.” Luke then asks “Vader. Is the dark side stronger?” Yoda replies “No... no... no. Quicker, easier, more seductive.” Luke goes on to ask how he can tell the difference from the two. Yoda explains that he will know. Yoda says that that the days training is over, so Luke set him down and sees a huge, black dead tree with a cave next to it. “There's something not right here.” Luke chillingly states. “I feel cold.” Yoda is shown sitting on a log pointing at the cave with his cane. Yoda solemnly states “That place... is strong with the dark side of the Force. A domain of evil it is... In you must go. ”What's in there?” Luke asks. “Only what you take with you.” Yoda says in a quiet voice. Luke grabs his weapon belt and starts to walk towards the cave. …show more content…
Luke enters the cave and starts exploring. The farther he goes in the darker it gets. There is a splash and then you can hear the sound of Darth Vader and his breathalyzer. In a slightly slower motion, you see Darth Vader walk around a corner as Luke backs up. Luke draws his lightsaber and Vader follows. Vader engages and Luke blocks every swing and then he swung and decapitated Vader. Vader's head in the mask roles over to Luke face up. Luke looks at it with intensity. The front part of the mask pops off to reveal a face that is identical to his. He stares at it
The prevalence of balance throughout the Star Wars universe is evident from the beginning. All through the series “The Force” is referenced to as a delicate balance that needs to be kept in order. Although “The Force” is referenced as being strong with one character or another, it would appear that both sides of it, Light and Dark, seem to equal out. Yoda hints at this by denying that the dark side of the force is stronger than the light side (Episode V). The Force is also a balance within oneself that can easily switch from Light to Dark if a Jedi is unwary. While in the Dagobah system, Luke is warned by Yoda to “Beware of the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression; the dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny”. This balance is an essential part of the Star Wars universe just as it is in the real world.
The “Star Wars” franchise is familiar to most, and may be the easiest in which to discover the hero’s journey. In “Star Wars,” we find young Luke Skywalker, a rebellious youth, living on a farm on the isolated planet of Tatooine, taken in by his aunt and uncle following the death of his mother and father. Luke grows up with dreams of flying through the stars, only dreams until his chance meeting with Ben Kenobi. Kenobi informs Luke of his real past: that his father was a Jedi knight and that Luke was destined to become great. Though Kenobi’s guidance and Luke own adventurous spirit, he finds himself pushed into an intergalactic quest to become a valiant Jedi in a galaxy controlled by the evil Empire.
Socrates and Luke are both considered to be great educators. They have both influenced countless people with their teachings. However, comparing the two is slightly strange since Socrates is the subject of the story, which is told by Plato, and Luke is the teller of the story of Jesus. A comparison can be made between the two as Socrates is a great teacher while Plato is mostly silent and Luke, while not overly prevalent in the his story can be compared to other accounts of the story of Jesus among which his by far the most didactic. But when you are comparing the two you must keep in mind that you are in actuality comparing four and also that while the story teller is supposed to only be telling you what he saw, he is also telling his personal vision of what he saw. Therefore he has a personal bias, which affects the purpose behind his style.
Imagine a world where the government has finally made every induvial equal in every aspect of their lives. In the short story, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., this is a living reality. In this society, the strong, intelligent, and beautiful are required to wear handicaps of heavy weights, earphones, and masks, thus rendering their attributes equal to everyone. With a government constantly pushing for equality among all citizens, Vonnegut reveals a dystopia that society is slowly working toward. Vonnegut uses foreshadowing to reveal the future of society by using Harrison Bergeron and Diana Moon Glampers as mechanisms to reveal the horrors of allowing citizens to be too equal.
Star Wars and Harry Potter are two different dimensions. However, these two different dimensions have a similar way of teaching. In Star Wars, the place of learning is the Jedi Temple and in Harry Potter, it is Hogwarts. The Jedi Temple is where the students that have the potential of becoming a Jedi to learn about the Force. Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, there lived a princess. Her name was Princess Leia. Growing up, she didn’t realize that one day, she and her twin brother would be travelling through space, fighting the dark side, fighting their father. This is Star Wars, the epic battle between good and evil. This is a very iconic movie series, one of the best sci-fi there is! Although, that is my opinion, I have a feeling many people would agree with me. As we take a look inside the film series, you’ll see a picture of what might be out there, and we have George Lucas to thank for that!
Foreshadowing is a common literary device used to allude to something to come in a story before it has happened. Foreshadowing in a sense is reading between the lines attempting to understand what the author is trying to convey and often is intertwined with the overarching morale of the story. It can often be detected through character communication and social interaction as it is shown in Philip K. Dick’s short story “Beyond Lies the Wub”. He also uses world-building, the technique of establishing a setting, especially in science fiction novels, that is unique to the novel created by the author. As a matter of fact, decades later she is still one of the best crime novelists due to her remarkable skills in writing suspense-themed stories. An example would be her book, And Then There Were None, which is a murder mystery surrounding ten people on an isolated island. There are many aspects of writing that are important in a mystery novel, such as literary devices. Christie’s unique use of certain literary devices such as foreshadowing, imagery, and point of view, all contribute to create suspense in the novel, And Then There Were None.

He is being forced to abide by the rules in prison and at first, does not get a warm welcome by his fellow prisoners because he refuses to abide by the captains order which is simply to get their minds right. He is soon challenged to a fight by one of his fellow inmates. Throughout the fight, it is clear that Luke is being brutally beaten. He can barely stand up on his feet but he refuses to give up. To me, this is a sign of resistance of power because he does not want to just face the fact that he lost this battle.
Cool Hand Luke was based on the experiences of Lucas Jackson, a war hero who returned to the United States. Lucas is sentenced to prison after he is caught drunkenly cutting the heads off of parking meters for no apparent reason. For this offense, Lucas is given a sentence of two years at a notorious Florida prison camp run by a hard-core warden. Initially, Lucas is not well liked by either the guards or inmates due to the fact that he sees himself as an independent and ignores the pecking order in the prison. The reputation of Lucas begins to change when he shows resilience in a boxing match with Dragline, the alpha male inmate. His reputation is cemented when he bluffs at poker with a losing hand, earning him the name “Cool Hand Luke”. From this point forward Luke is revered by the other inmates and looked at as a leader and role model.
In the story "To Build a Fire" by Jack London, foreshadowing is often used. In this story foreshadowing is an effective way to build up a climax. The foreshadowing is both shown by the environment and things the characters say.
Marie de France wrote several short poems, called lais. Many of these such as Equitan, Bisclavret, and Le Fresne focus on love that causes trouble for the characters. In Equitan, the main character falls in love with an Elven queen, a relationship about which he can tell nobody. Bisclavret falls prey to an unworthy wife and his beastly form. Le Fresne’s affair suffers due to her mother’s slanderous words and a lover who is ruled by his men. Marie de France uses both direct and indirect foreshadowing in these lais to imply that misfortune will fall upon the characters and each use works to keep readers intrigued in the story.
The book Paper Towns, written by John Green, was about the adventures a girl named Margo Roth Spiegelman and a boy named Quentin Jacobsen go on. The book, which is fiction, focused on Margo who runs away to go on an adventure. She leaves clues for Quentin, also known as Q. However, when Q goes to find Margo, he realizes that he does not know who the real Margo is at all. The three topics addressed in the compelling novel are tone, foreshadowing, and symbol.
