The poem Richard Cory by Edwin Arlington Robinson and Crazy Courage by Alma Luz Villanueva exemplify how human nature deals with the surrounding people’s critics and that people will never see a person’s happiness through their appearance and ways of living. It measures both their will and determination to how they conquer people’s views towards them. The main characters, Richard from Richard Cory and Michael from Crazy Courage took opinions differently through their actions and judgment on their routine. Richard was described as a perfect man because he was handsome, intelligent, and rich. In addition, he never had a chance to fully understand himself because there’s a whole community watching his movement to what he does on a day to day basis and also most people are looking up to him that’s why he chose to live a fake life instead to not dissatisfied them. Knowing this whows that the real problem with Richard is that he is afraid of changes and also he fears people’s judgement once he have done something that is not the norm. Furthermore, knowing how his townspeople adored him, changing his persona would be impossible since “whenever Richard Cory went down town, we people on the pavement looked at him: he was a gentleman from sole to crown, cleaned favored, and imperially slim” (Robinson 1-4). By saying this, Richard was trapped and the only way for him to get out of it is if he removes himself from the town permanently. And he did, people were shocked that Richard committed suicide after having a lavish lifestyle. Which is why he doesn’t get the same treatment by his peers especially during a time period were having a different sexual orientation was not accepted But, he had the courage to acknowledge the reality and his purpose to educate people around him to never discriminate. Everyday he experiences hatred, but he walks with pride and confidence every time they are looking at him with disgust. It is fair to say that he shouldn’t be punished by society for who he is because no matter what the people around him think is right, Michael also has the right to choose his own happiness which for him is being himself. This is why Michael was described as having a perfect dignity for offering a rose “to the blind, to the amused, to the impressed, to those who would kill him, and to those who would love him” for them to know that he appreciate everyone and to teach them a lesson about his way of life (Villanueva 27-29). Michael was courageous even though all the hardships he receives can sometimes be discouraging, but then he keeps fighting on to prove that he belongs in the same place as everyone else's. All in all, Michael’s bravery pioneered the present and future societies to willingly accept a person for who they are and not differentiate them because of their choice of clothing or
