Perspectives and experiences of people who have undergone cosmetic surgery

Cosmetic surgery has become popular in recent years especially among women despite the potential risks( Golshani, Mani, Toubaei, Farnia, Sepehry& Alikhani, 2016). It has been noted that the number of individuals who want to or have already undergone cosmetic surgery have raised during the past decades and the trend of overall procedures has increased by 115 percent since 2000( American Society of Plastic Surgery, 2016). Cosmetic surgery has gained its popularity and its large demands has been a focus of attention. By analysing the data gathered from the focus groups and interviews, it is possible to find that cosmetic surgery can enhance an individuals’ appearance and most are done to improve self-esteem and satisfaction. Some individuals with Body Dysmorphic Disorder(BBD) are obsessions about their appearance and would drive them to have cosmetic surgery more than once ( Sarwer& Spitzer, 2012). There are also lots of people who have undergone cosmetic surgeries were influenced by the information provided in cosmetic surgery reality television(Soest, Kvalem& Wichstrøm, 2012) and childhood experiences as well. However, cosmetic surgery can not perfectly reach individuals’ expectations and can not only change their appearances but also mentally influences them and sometimes lead to depression( Ericksen& Billick, 2012). My research can be helpful to those individuals who want to take a cosmetic surgery to figure out do they really need to have a cosmetic surgery and avoid unnecessary risks associated with cosmetic surgeries. In addition, my finding can help to improve care in those cosmetic surgery hospitals. With my findings cosmetic hospitals can have a deep understanding and provide useful and necessary supports to their patients, for example a psychologist is needed to talk to individuals before a cosmetic surgery to see whether they are suitable to have the cosmetic surgery or not because the motivations for the desire of cosmetic surgeries are able to show an individual’s psychological profile. Psychologists are also vital to individuals in the recovery stages to help minimise some possible mental
