The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is about corruption and reveals the dishonesty of people in the era. People such as Jordan Baker, Meyer Wolfsheim and Tom Buchanan display their deceptive ways in this novel. First off, Jordan Baker, a young golf champion, reveals her corruptive ways when Nick recalls that “at her first big golf tournament there was a row that nearly reached the newspapers-a suggestion that she had moved her ball from a bad lie in the semi-final round” (57). When this story almost reached the newspaper, it was because “it had approached the proportions of a scandal” (57). This is quite the story if it is important enough to reach the newspaper and she would have been disqualified. However, the scandal “died away” (57) and the caddy “retracted his statement, and the only other witness admitted that he may have been mistaken” (57). Nick is considered a man of "new money." He has established and now manages his own riches. He meets a particularly mysterious man, his neighbor, Jay Gatsby. Through Gatsby, he meets people from the East Egg of Long Island, who are considered to be of "old money," wealth or business that has been inherited through generations. Over time, Nick and Jay become great friends. Nick helps Gatsby learn about himself and his aspirations in life, and vice versa.

The novel also revealed the darker side of this time with its underlying themes of greed and betrayal on the part of many of the characters. The novel as a whole seems to be a very well thought out piece of literature with little or no flaws. However, if studied a bit harder several defects can be spotted. Nick Carraway and Gatsby share many immoral characteristics, but a big choice separates the two. Daisy Buchanan is an extremely immoral person; she even went to the lengths of taking someone's life. Jay and Daisy are similar but Daisy is borderline corrupt. The entire story is told through Nick Carraway's point of view and by his carelessness it is obvious the narrator possesses poor values.
