As the 1990s came, hip-hop music was still largely coming from the East Coast. However, there were several West Coast rappers and groups that were making a name for themselves in the hip-hop community. Rappers such as Ice T and rap group N.W.A. consisting of Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E were rapping about issues that various people considered controversial. These subjects were police brutality, racial profiling and disrespecting women. These West Coast rappers introduce a new sound to mainstream America that became known as gangsta rap for its raw lyrical content and gangsta lifestyle. After leaving the group N.W.A. in 1989, West Coast rapper Ice Cube decided to pursue a solo career. In October 31, 1991, he released his second solo studio album Death Certificate. This album contained a raw lyrical content and sensitive issues that were not generally talk about in hip-hop music. During this time in California, there was a great deal of tension between African-Americans and Asian-Americans. In addition, there was conflict between Blacks and the police. This album labeled by countless people was divided into two sections. The first section was the Death Side which is "a mirror image of where we are today" (Chang 342).
