Broken Arrow “We have a number of difficulties facing our nation, but I believe fatherlessness is right at the top of the list.” (Tony Dungy) In the Movie “We were soldiers” starring Mel Gibson, There comes a time when the American soldiers are surrounded by the enemy. Mel Gibson looks north and south and east and west and his company is totally surrounded with nowhere to go. As he turns in each direction and see’s the crisis that he in, he utters two words. He says “broken-arrow, Broken-arrow”. His radio operator gets on the phone and says “broken-arrow”. The overabundance of debauched dad’s on Television undermines a cultural ideal of responsible fatherhood at a time when that ideal is most needed. At a time when the culture around us is morally crumbling for lack of responsible men leading their families. A time when the divorce rate is 20 X higher than it was 50 years ago. We are in a time when fatherhood is under assault and the consequences of dads disappearing from America’s Family landscape is detrimental to the well-being of fatherless children. The contributors to fatherlessness are only growing, as are the consequences but there is still hope for father-fullness in America today. Consequences of fatherlessness. Sigmund Freud nailed it when he said “I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection.” There are numerous Consequences regarding the issue of fatherlessness in America today, many of which have lasting impacts. Poverty is one major issue that can result from a fatherless home; a recent study showed that children in father-absent homes are almost four times more likely to be poor.
