Conformation bias is the tendency to seek out information that supports our beliefs and ignore all evidence that contradicts them. Also, because of the tendency to search for or interpret information in a way that confirms preconceptions, the bias leads to statistical errors. This bias is displayed when information is gathered or remembered selectively, or when it is interpreted it in a biased way. The effect is stronger for emotionally charged issues and for deeply entrenched beliefs. Like in the case between Olivia and one of her “lovers”, Jake. In naturalistic observation, the tasks people perform and the people they interact with are all genuine elements of their lives. Thus, their behavior is much more likely to represent normal daily interactions. In a scene in season 4 (episode 15), Olivia interacts with Rose, who is concerned for her friend Lois, who has gone “missing.” Prior to that episode, Olivia was kidnapped and held hostage. While that tragedy occurred, Olivia was held in Lois’s apartment with Lois present, with her hands in restraints. As the episode continues Lois is then shot and killed by Olivia’s captors. Fast-forward to then, Rose sought out Olivia’s help in investigating Lois’s disappearance. Olivia knowing that Lois will not appear assures Rose that she will. As the episode continues Olivia notices Rose’s behavior and her will to stop at nothing to ensure Lois’s return and/or gain closure to or whatever occurred. Although altering the fact that Lois will no longer be present, Rose’s behavior stayed the same. As Olivia displayed naturalistic observation by watching and reminiscing on Rose’s behavior, she discovered that they were “more than just friends.” In essence, Olivia in turn displayed and defied the concept of naturalistic
