The “Ex Basketball Player” and “Roller Skate Man” start out as two similar stories but, as the poems progress how the characters handle how people think of them makes it two completely different stories. The ex basketball player has freedom but he choses to stay in the past because of the opinions of his peers, as the roller skate man uses his freedom and doesn't listen to his peers opinions. If these two characters swapped their perspectives how would their life change? The ex basketball play was the best of the best until his ball career ended in the same place it started. High school. He feels trapped, that he cannot change because the citizens in his town wouldn’t accept him. So he dribbles tube tires as he greys and the town now and forever sees him as the boy who missed his chance. Along the same lines the roller skate man is acknowledged as the “freak” in Queens street, hes looked at as a lonely poor man with no perseverance or support. He skates around threw his troubles and avoiding them as well, he knows what people think of him but he won't let other people's opinions change the way he sees himself. …show more content…

Instead of giving up he should have persevered and not let the town's opinions affect him , “It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get back up.”- Vince Lombardi. If the Ex-Basketball player rose after he was pushed down he would be twice as strong, he'd be known as the guy who never gave up,instead of the man with the wasted talent. Now as he greys he's full of shame and regret, knowing he could have gone farther in life than the man that works at the gas station. Dribbling tires because it's too late for him
