Selection A: In the essay “Time and the Machine” the author, Aldous Huxley, argues that time is what controls the world. Huxley claims that “Time, as we know it, is a very recent invention. It is a by-product of industrialism.” The author believes that our industrialized and urban society is causing people to overlook the beauty of natural time. In the past, people would use cosmic time to decide when to eat, when to get up, and when to go to work, but now everything is done by a strict artificial time schedule. The author seems disappointed that this generation does not spend more time enjoying nature, taking walks, and appreciating the beauty of the outdoors. The author states that “Time is our tyrant” from this the audience can understand that Huxley dislikes what manufactured time has done to society.

The author argues that if the American dream were to die it would prevent people from moving up in the economic class. Krugman believes that with the drastic increase in income and wealth inequality America is becoming a class-ridden society. The author states that “after World War II, the American dream of upward mobility was a real experience for many people:” however, this only lasted for about thirty years. Recently the distribution of income in America has been inadequate, according to Krugman he claims that “the income of the top 0.1 percent rose by 343 percent and the income of the top 0.01 percent rose 599 percent.” These increases cause more income inequality and the author fears that there will be no upward mobility in the economy. The author believes that if the American Dream is no longer a reality then you are likely to stay in the same social and economic classes that you were born
