Comparing My Papa's Waltz And Rites Of Passages

When people think of a male, whether it be an adult or child, how do people think they generally act? There are really two answers to this question. Male’s either act tough or soft there really isn’t a middle choice. In Sharon Old’s poem “Rites of Passages”, she describes how males are just made to be tough and not have a soft side. In Theodore Roethke’s poem “My Papa’s Waltz”, he talks about how males can be both tough and soft. This analysis will show how each author used a little bit everything to prove their point of view on how males act both tough and soft.
In the poem “Rites of Passage” the author, Sharon Olds, describes her son’s seventh birthday party, and how the entire time the boys were trying to be super manly and wanted to one up each other by wanting to fight each other. Some of the similarities include both fathers being drinkers but how the father spends time with his child is different, both poems also are a look back one certain day in the authors life, whether it be an important day or just a happy day for the author. Some differences between the two poems include, Theodore’s is about the softer side of man and Sharon’s is about the tougher side of adults and kids, in Theodore’s poem the father spends his time after he is done drinking with his child, while in Sharon’s poem during the birthday party the father is out drinking and will probably not come back till the next morning. Even with these similarities and differences between these two poems they still let the reader know, if the reader looks hard enough, how the author feels males
