“My guiding principles in life are to be honest, genuine, thoughtful and caring.” These noble guidelines Prince William of England set for his life, seem to describe exactly how any true prince should behave. Yet Niccolo Machiavelli had a completely different idea. A prince, in his view, should be cunning, honor his word only if it will not do him any sort of harm, prefer to be feared rather than loved, cheat fortune, and make his own rules. Many little girls all over the world have grown up hearing about many fairy stories about princes and their princess. But the princes from our stories do not seem similar to Machiavelli’s princes. He is the ruler of all creation and the only example that can be trustfully and faithfully followed. Machiavelli’s opinion on a true prince is the exact opposite. While the Prince of Peace will forever be the same in the past, today, and in the future and can always be relied on to give the same answer no matter the circumstances. A Machiavellian prince is wavy and inconsistence. Giving a different answer depending on what will benefit him the most. Machiavelli states that, “And so he needs to have a spirit dispose to change as the winds of fortune and variations of things command him, and as I said above, not depart from good, when possible, but know how to enter into evil, when forced by necessity.” A prince should know when the winds are blowing in his favor or not and how to adjust to those changes. He should not be afraid to act harshly or evilly, never staying in the same mood long enough to deduce what sort of character he may have. Behaving in this way will profit him well, as his people will know that pushing the limits would be a foolish and dangerous act. Never knowing whether their prince will act kindly or otherwise.
