Comparing HD-DVD and Blu-ray
Since 1997, DVD has been the #1 top selling format for home entertainment, crushing VHS within a five year time frame. But technology is forever changing and it’s only a matter of time before DVD’s go the way of VHS. With two new formats (High Definition-DVD and Blu-ray) on the horizon, which one will win the race? Both formats use blue laser technology, which has a shorter wavelength than red (DVD), allowing it to read the smaller digital data "spots" packed a lot more densely onto a standard-size disc. In other words, they hold a lot more memory than your standard DVD’s. “The comparison chart shows that HD-DVD and Blu-ray disks will be pretty similar. Both should be able to fit a high definition movie onto one side of one disk, and both HD-DVD and Blu-ray players will play old DVD movies.”(Boutin, Paul) it’s still too early to call the race with both technologies about a year away, but my money is on Blu-ray.
HD-DVD is more user friendly in terms of its name, with the title holding a name closer to DVD. (Carnoy, David) “Toshiba, NEC, and a couple of other upstarts will be pushing for HD-DVD.” HD-DVD is capable of holding 30GB or a full-length high-definition movie, plus extras, on a prerecorded double-layer disc (compare that to today's limit of 9GB for standard double-layer DVDs). Plus the cost of making a HD-DVD is on par with the cost of today’s DVD’s, making it a smoother transition for the big companies to deal with. Toshib...
John Small, a fourteen year old boy in Uptown St. Paul, proceeds into the Suburban World Cinema, anxious to see Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant. He is equipped with a parental note, replete with the phone number where his parents can be reached to verify that they did indeed author the note should its authenticity be questioned. John pushes seven crumpled-up dollar bills and the folded note into the metal dugout under the box office window, only to be met with a tinny, disinterested voice booming through the round silver speaker mounted on the window: "No children under seventeen allowed! Sorry. This note isn't gonna cut it."
12. DVDs are digital versatile disc, optical discs used to externally store data. DVDs have higher recording and retrieving speeds, are better suited for backing up information, and have higher capacity per device than
After watching Charlie Rose’s interview with Jim Collins; where Collins explains his recent book How the Mighty Fall, presented me with an opportunity to reflect over recent companies that were staples in my childhood and early adult memories and now are non-existent. In this paper, I will look, analyze and relate Blockbuster Video and their history to Jim Collins’ five stages of an organization.
Next, if this kind of rating took place then it could become universal and more socially excepted than every country with it’s own system for rating. Imagine, you can go to other countries (Europe perhaps) and watch movies made in English there. This might send some sort of bond between countries in rivalry. If the rating system is more universal then DVD players won’t need to have region block outs. This would enable people to buy a regular DVD player and watch movies from other countries. Plus, this would save the manufacturer money by not having to put more money into a region block out chip. This would also help out people buying DVD players by having them become cheaper. If we could watch movies from other countries, that would encourage us to expand our horizon on movies from other countries.
Most DVDs employ a method of encryption called Content Scrambling System (CSS). With CSS, each encrypted DVD contains a key that is used along with a key in the player in order to decrypt the contents of the DVD. The DVD Copy Control Association (DVDCCA), the CSS license holder, issues the key in the DVD player to licensed manufacturers of DVD players [2]. DeCSS uses a valid but unlicensed key to decrypt the DVD content.
Since 1999 the growth of spending on DVD purchases and rentals has been incredible. According to Alexander & Associates, “Rapidly growing consumer activity and spending has built this industry into a major market phenomenon. The DVD format for enjoying pre-recorded entertainment at home is extraordinarily popular and consumers are changing their behavior to accommodate it.”
Another feature that is a first in the console industry is Xbox’s internal 8-Gigabyte (Gb) Hard-Drive or Hard Disk Drive (Hdd). This contributes too much of Xbox’s weight, but gives many features. With this you don’t have a need for a memory card to save your game files, you save them right to the hard-drive. This is a very nice feature on the Xbox, because it saves you money.
United States. This is a documentary about several children who live in poverty and dream of going to America in order to be reunited with their biological parents, or simply to seek out a better life for themselves. The way that the children are getting to America is by riding a train known as “La Bestia” (The Beast) throughout Mexico and ultimately arriving at the border with the United States. The children risk losing their lives every day, either by falling off the train as they sleep or getting kidnapped or raped by predators who are also trying to get to America. As you watch the film you are able to see every stop that is made through Mexico until finally
...ut it took on average three months. During the initial three month period stores were very unprofitable. Blockbuster simply could not afford to roll it out nationwide. Red Box has grown to control a forty percent share of the rental industry.
CD burning enables any individual with the software and equipment to make a duplicate copy of any compact disc. Compact disks are also able to hold information, and this is a major advantage of burning technology. With the ability to burn information onto CDs, people are now able to make larger files and presentations and are not limited as much by storage space as they were when floppy disks were the only medium to transfer data between computers. The ability to transport large files is an advantage for many people: from students with large projects to do to business men and women who have major presentations to give. Now people are able to transport larger files w...
However now we can buy monitors with better hardware, as most of monitors now days are made of mostly LCD (liquid crystal display). They are better as they ensure better quality of monitors and the pixels are always in high resolution. In market light emitting diode monitors are available to, they are very thin as the light is emitted at the back of the monitor. This method reduces the size and increase the quality with shows a big step from the first monitors. The Led monitors are better for graphical users as due to increased resolution of the pixels it makes better for graphical users to work on them and display them as the contrast output is immense on Led monitors. Now manufactures have made them HD so they are even better and it is possible to watch movies and TV shows on them. Users have a choice of size of the monitor, which is useful as not everyone user wants t...
Studio Power; The major entertainment studios in Hollywood control film release windows and distribution rights, which are two primary determinants for Netflix’s acquisition costs and profits. Therefore, if the studios decide to decrease the 4-6 week gap between DVD releases and VOD releases, Netflix would lose a major strategic advantage.
So if you’re a photographer or someone that is looking for storage, the best option would be to get yourself a hard disk drive, it might be slow, but you’re paying far less than a solid state drive and getting a lot more storage. The more gigabytes the solid state drive, the more it will cost as they are the new technology, and to get the newest technology, you have to pay the big bucks. On August 15, 2015, Samsung developed and released the world’s largest hard drive at 16TB, and it’s a solid state drive… I wonder how much that is going for. All in all, the hard disk drive easily wins on price, capacity and availability, whilst the solid state drives wins on speed (fragmentation), form factor, durability and
Although Hastings vowed to be divergent from other video retailers, his goal was to use an identical pricing strategy; however, one that would “appeal to customers [. . .] who used online shopping as an alternative to traveling to retail outlets” due to ease of access and more preferences (Shih, Kaufman, & Spinola, 2009, p. 3). Furthermore, Netflix launched its business at a time DVDs had barely hit the marketplace as the firm anticipated the new technology to be a promising venture. Nonetheless, within a year DVD players became so vast...
