1. Compare how Orwell and McTeigue connect with the experiences, ideas, values and beliefs of their readers when exploring the abuse of science and technology and its effect on life and society in their texts.

George O'Wells dystopian and politically motivated novel where society is under totalitarian governments shares striking resemblance but original ideas with the adaptation in the graphic novel 'V for Vendetta' (Comparison focused on film adaptation) . In both mediums privacy, power, history and authority are abused through the use of science and technology which connect with the readers/audience in a variety of ways.

In 1984 pyramidal buildings are allocated around the city, with the most menacing being the 'Ministry of Love'. In this omniscient but mysterious building, torture and imprisonment of enemies against the party occurs, eventually seen in Winstons imprisonment. In 'V for Vendetta' police and investigators are used essentially for the party leaders own wishes. Observed when all personality and physical traits (sexuality, race) not accepted by the party are captured, tortured and experimented on. The science backed torturing methods are an abuse of science against civil rights. In 1984, once tortured and interrogated Winston admits to all crimes some of which were not committed and eventually looses all morals he once had after betraying Julia. Orwell’s intention of this segment in this novel is to demonstrate how easily Winston’s values can be taken and therefore encourage the reader to doubt their own.
