Topic: Is it better to be feared or loved?
The Prince by Machiavelli believed the best of both worlds should be, to be feared and loved by others. Unfortunately this isn’t the conventional way that things happen. If a choice was made, Machiavelli believed it was better to be feared as a leader, than to be loved as a leader. That does not mean he should be merciless or cruel, but that he should be ready to formulate a decision or resolution to almost any situation. It is better to be feared rather than be loved. This point is proven thought the novel The Prince by Machiavelli and “A Bronx Tale”.
Machiavelli is accurate when he states that it is better to choose being feared over being loved. As a leader you must be willing to do what it takes to gain political success. Show authority and have your followers respect you, not only as a person, but also in …show more content…

Although that seems like the best option to be feared and loved equally, it is not likely to happen. While being loved sets a friendship, it does not guarantee either side will be loyal. To be feared is to have and maintain power over your people. You gain their attention; they obey and feel protected by you. They will do what they must to avoid the consequences of disobeying. However, with fear you must learn to balance and control the amount of dominance and distress you put on your people. Both Machiavelli’s The Prince and “A Bronx Tale” stress the importance of ruling with fear. They set good examples of times where fear is a more reasonable alternative rather than showing love. With fear one has a tendency to gain the respect and discipline one expects. The leader should be able to rule through the use of fear, getting the job done without the reservation of how people will react. Fear, although irrational, will always get the job done without you becoming a pushover in the way that love
