The Giver film and the “short story” “The ones who walk away from Omelas” both showed different societies with the same utopian background at the beginning. Each society characterized for their happiness, beautiful and imaginary settings with organized communities, and very intelligent people. But at the same time, they were miserable and selfish proving and showing that a perfect life doesn’t exist. Having laws and beliefs, which they made converting it into dystopian societies. Having perfection on the outside, but the inside completely rotten.

In Omelas, people didn’t know about the child, until a certain day of their lives. People thought that their city was the perfect place to live, but some disliked the place after they meet the clandestine child and the conditions in which the poor child lived. Those who didn’t like this awful belief decided to leave the city. They couldn’t be happier there anymore, all that they thought about their beautiful city, it was completely decried, knowing that there was an innocent life paying for their happiness. They just walk away from this place, which was so perfect, but so cruel at the same time. In contrast, in The Giver film, people didn’t have an idea what they were doing, because they could remember any important event in the world, so they didn’t even question anything because they didn’t even know what death was. Also, they grew up and in a way were coerced to follow orders and to accomplish their duties until they were elderly and to be sent to a “better place”.
In conclusion the “short story” “The ones who walk away from Omelas” and The Giver film, both had similar societies with different ways to see life. They are good examples of selfishness and arrogance between people. The film and the “short story” turned out to be an aberration as societies. There were cruelty and inhumane manners to control their people. Similarly, both stories generally guided by hatred and selfishness of human beings.
