One may assume that deliberately choosing to become a vagabond to prove that one is self sufficient is praiseworthy, but not every story of rags to riches or transcendentalism prints lasting impressions on civilization. Chris McCandless wanted to discover himself in nature and, consequently, commenced a spontaneous journey which ultimately lead to his untimely demise. Adam Shepard, with similar desires to McCandless, chose to prove that survival and success are attainable when poverty-stricken. While McCandless and Shepard ventured on quests to find what they are capable of on their own, the backgrounds they had and circumstances they were given restrict the majority of society to be positively influenced by their stories. Some argue that Shepard only represents a small percentage of the populous, being a young, white male, and that this determined his luck throughout his journey. With age, gender, and race aside, others maintain that his mindset and work ethic allowed him success. These arguments have an abundance of evidence to support both ideas, but not many support the opinion that Shepard’s project was just adventure, not proving anything to society about the American dream. He was fortunate enough to find a shelter with accommodations such as a place to rest, eat, and even find work. QUOTE. Because Shepard’s focus was solely on finding a job with better pay, it is easy to assume that the majority of people in poverty do not have those opportunities and therefore, are not able to follow Shepard’s lead in escaping poverty. Similar in their motives, McCandless and Shepard starkly contrast each other in their views of money. McCandless found money to be the source of the ideals he was running
