Beowulf is an epic about a hero seeking fame and fortune by doing heroic deeds and protecting his people. Dennis Covington, who is the author of Salvation on Sand Mountain, Is a man who writes about the snake handling rituals in Scottsboro, Alabama. Both of these men are on a quest, which is a search for what someone wishes to know or have, to achieve fame and to belong. The quests of Dennis Covington and Beowulf are very similar, but they also share some differences.
In this epic, Beowulf is a young and famous hero who is seeking fame so that his name will continue on even after his death. Beowulf is not the average man, he has super strength and unique abilities that allow him to battle and achieve many goals and accomplishments. “To sail the swan’s road and search out that king” (Beowulf 200). “The monster wrenched and wrestled with him but Beowulf was mindful of his mighty strength, the wondrous gifts God had showered on him: he relied for help on the Lord of All, on his care and favor. So he overcame the foe, brought down the hell-brute”(Beowulf 1269-1274). When the epic refers Grendel to “Cain’s clan” or “grim demon”, this represents Beowulf and his fight against sin. Beowulf believed that God controlled when he was going to die, thus God controlled his quest of fame. Dennis Covington states, “Feeling after God is dangerous business. And Christianity without passion, danger, and mystery may not really be Christianity at all”(Covington 349). Covington meant that people should never try to be like God. Christianity is not about seeking God’s power; it is about having a passion for him, knowing he puts us through dangerous situations only to strengthen us.
