A book that captures time period quite well is Scott F. Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby. The character Jay Gatsby represents the overindulgences of 1920s fortune. Gatsby’s fortune is reinforced on top of his mansion and carefree spending habits by the wild parties he throws:

Yet regardless, by far criminals who had the most to gain were gangsters such as Al Capone, who made $100 million a year from speakeasies and casinos alone. Violence played a large role in organised crimes during the years of Prohibition, with an increase in burglary, theft and battery assaults by a total of 22%. There were also wars between gangsters over each other’s territory, and the most famous act of violence during the years of Prohibition came from Capone’s army of 700 gangsters, who committed over 300 murders in Chicago. Willoughby points out that although organised crime existed in the years before and after Prohibition, it was “albeit on a smaller scale.” This is convincing as the affluence that the twenties created, along with demands for alcohol provided alternative opportunities for organised crime. The dizzying rise of the social market in the aftermath of the war led to a sudden, sustained increase in the national wealth and a newfound materialism, as people began to spend and consume at unprecedented levels. A person from any social background could, Potentially, make a fortune, but the American aristocracy-families with old wealth-scorned the newly rich industrialists and speculators. Additionally, the passage of the Eighteenth Amendment in 1919,which banned the sale of alcohol, created a thriving underworld designed to satisfy the massive demand of bootleg liquor among rich and poor alike.
It is said that for every market that is destroyed, a new underground market is created. This was exactly the case with prohibition. Though domestic violence did decrease, much crime increased. Bootlegers (people who made/sold their own whiskey) popped up everywhere. Speakeasies, which were underground bars, were frequented by virtually everyone. Seceret drinking was considered a glamorous thing-even in Washington parties. Bootlegging gangs began to increase, thus an increase in street crime occured. One of the most famous of these gangsters was Al Capone. Capone's bootlegging ring earned him approximately 60,000,000 dollars a year. One example of gang related crime was the St. Valentines Day Massacre, in which Capones's gang gunned down and killed seven members of "Bugs" Morgans' gang.

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is an absurd story, whether considered as romance, melodrama, or plain record of New York high life. The occasional insights into character stand out as very green oases on an arid desert of waste paper. Throughout the first half of the book the author shadows his leading character in mystery, but when in the latter part he unfolds his life story it is difficult to find the brains, the cleverness, and the glamour that one might expect of a main character.
In the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the main character, Gatsby is the host of many elaborate parties at his home in West Egg. In the morning the lawn crew would come and pamper the yard, in the evening the cooks would begin to prepare the meals, and as dusk approached, the guests would pile out of their taxis, motor cars, and boats (36). Some invited and some not, all were coming in search of a pleasant evening among people. Fitzgerald’s parties unveiled a fun-loving, lazy side of most people in the 1920’s.
During the 1920s, the social scene was gradually changing because of the Prohibition Law; with the influence of prohibition, new waves of modern gangsters were created, and they were primarily involved in such crimes as “bootlegging” and “bank robbery.” The author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, wrote the novel of The Great Gatsby, which focuses on the unachievable love affair between Gatsby and Daisy. In this novel, Jay Gatsby confronts death by getting shot on his back by flaming pistol triggered by Mr. Wilson. However, Mr. Wilson is not the only person who is responsible for Gatsby’s death; Nick Carraway, Daisy Buchanan, and Tom Buchanan are also accountable.
In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Prohibition does not apply to the wealthy. The temperance movement believed that men went to bars and spent all the family’s money on alcohol and Prohibition (the 18th Amendment) passed in January 1920. Prohibition outlawed the manufacture, transportation, importation, and sale of intoxicating liquors in America. Congress felt that this would help improve society and show that the government had control over the citizens. After the start of Prohibition, bootleggers started smuggling alcohol in from Canada and overseas. They would forge prescriptions to get “medicinal” whiskey, and would make their own alcohol.
Luxurious car, magnificent mansion, and a plethora of food and alcohol, this was what came with being a part of the Mafia in the 1920’s. People in the Mafia lived luxurious, cushy lifestyles, while also being able to provide for their family, but as the saying goes, “With every positive there is a negative”. The Mobsters lived well, but that came with the risk of being killed or imprisoned. Jay Gatsby, in the book The Great Gatsby, experienced some of these fears as well the luxurious lifestyle that came with being in the Mafia. Overall most people stayed out of the Mafia due to morals and fear, but the wealth certainly resulted in appeal for some.
In the beginning of the twenties America was in the midst of an economic boom, people were happy- World War I was over and Americans were rich. But by the end, because of prohibition, and in large part because of the stock market crash, the American economy quickly declined into the Great Depression. During this time the 18th Amendment- prohibition- was passed. Prohibition's supporters were initially surprised by what did not come to pass during the dry era. When the law went into effect, real estate developers and landlords expected rents to rise as saloons closed and neighborhoods improved. Theater producers were expecting an increase in customers as Americans searched for new ways to entertain themselves, ways that did not involve alcohol. But this did not happen. Instead, there was a decline in amusement and entertainment industries all over the United States. Some restaurants even failed, as they could no longer make a profit without legal liquor sales. On the whole, the initial economic effects of Prohibition were largely negative. The closing of breweries, distilleries and saloons led to the elimination of thousands of jobs, and in turn thousands more jobs were eliminated for barrel makers, truckers, waiters, and other related trades. One of the most profound effects of Prohibition was on government tax revenues. Before Prohibition, many states relied heavily on excise taxes in liquor sales to fund their budgets. The 1920s was an era of profound cultural conflicts. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, a wave of Italians migrated to America in search of better economic opportunities. In New York City alone, the Italian population grew from 20,000 in 1880 to a substantial 500,000 by 1910, which accounted for 10% of New York City’s population (Mafia in the United States). After the Prohibition, many Italian’s joined together to form the Mafia: an Italian-American crime organization that ruled the underground liquor trade. With members like Al Capone and John Gotti, the Mafia became a well-known and well-feared people among the public. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, reveals traces of the Mafia and their illegal business in the backdrop of the novel through the main character himself. A man desperate for money, Gatsby resorts to bootlegging to acquire his wealth, which gets him involved with suspicious characters, such as Meyer Wolsheim. Fitzgerald’s purpose for the creation of the character Meyer Wolfsheim was to epitomize the grim reality of the American Dream, a subject almost completely averted within the novel, which therefore allowed for the death of Gatsby, the figure of dreaming and reaching for the unattainable, by it’s harsh truth.

The "American Dream" supposedly allows everyone to climb the "social/economic ladder," if they wish to do so. Anyone that works hard is supposed to be able to move to a higher class. However, society often prevents social mobility. Social classes dictate who moves to a higher class and who does not. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, this issue was especially prevalent. The rigidity of classes was often an underlying theme in many novels during this time period. Gatsby also displays examples of corruption through his acquisition of wealth. Gatsby's business dealings are not clear. He admits to his neighbor, Nick that he is "in the drug store business" (95). The drug store business during prohibition means that the person is a bootlegger. Bootlegging is a highly profitable business and bootleggers are commonly associates with gangsters who commit harsh and cruel deeds. The society Gatsby wants to be a part of is based on money and power, not faith and love.

This book should be considered “required reading” because it introduces the reader to what life was like for the rich at that time, as well as the general mood that pervaded the decade. It speaks of concepts such as bootlegging, gambling, and “new money”, ideas that previously were not commonly written of. F. Scott Fitzgerald can be considered an authority on the twenties because he lived in the twenties with the type of people that were described in his book.
