A civil war is when people in the same country fight. The Civil War is an important part of history in the United States. The Civil War America had was between the South and the North for the freedom of african Americans slaves on U.S soil. Many things happened before the Civil War, arguments, battles, and compromise. Three compromise happened the Missouri Compromise, Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas- Nebraska Act. Those compromise delayed the Civil War by 40 years. The Missouri Compromise in 1820 was when Missouri requested to be part of the Union as a slave state. In 1849 California wanted to join the Union and again the fear of the balance between free and slave states would be interrupted that's what brought all of this on. Senator Henry Clay was the one that introduced the five laws in his compromise. The five things included in The compromise of 1850 were, the fugitive slave act which meant runaway slaves in the North would have to be brought back to their owners in the South. The slave trade in Washington D.C. ended because it's the Capital, and they knew it would look bad for them, for example having an outsider in D.C. and having them see a station on the streets that selling human beings and trading them. Also California entered the Union as a free state. In the state of Utah a territorial government was made and the last part of the compromise was it settled a dispute between Texas and New Mexico which also gave New Mexico a territorial government. Territorial government “The Constitution empowers Congress to govern the territory”. Both sides got something they really wanted like the North got another state as a free state and the South got the fugitive slave act, so they wouldn't have to those any more of their “property” if they went into the North and if anyone saw a runaway slave in the North they had to bring them back. The Kansas- Nebraska Act was passed by the U.S congress it. It let people in Kansas and Nebraska to choose if they want slavery in their new found territories or not by popular sovereignty. It got rid of the Missouri Compromise which made many Northerns angry because they believed that the Missouri Compromise was a long standing Compromise, when the South agreed with the Kansas- Nebraska Act. As soon as the law passed slavery supporters and non supporters went to Kansas to try to have some effect with the election on slavery. Violence soon broke out in Kansas when slavery supporters were charged with fraud by the non slavery supporters. The violence that broke out was nicknamed “Bleeding Kansas”. Non slavery supporters held another election but slavery supporters refused to vote. The president at the time who was a supporter of slavery, to end the violence sent troops, in result another election was held and the proslavery citizens won but once again were charged with fraud. Kansas didn't become a state but later on a new Constitution was made and settlers in Kansas had more non slavery supporters so with another election in 1861, they won and became a part of the Union as a free state. The Kansas- Nebraska Act was the last string for delaying the Civil War because the South who started the Civil War didn't get anything out of it and it destroyed all the peace that was made by the Missouri
